Whenever, i copy from my 4TB SSD drive (Ext), Samsung to another drive, after some time, i get error. The error is usually that the source drive becomes unresponsive. It is asif it is doing its own stuff.
I have to abort the source drive and unplug it from the laptop and after sometime, put it back.
This happens at randome times. If i copy small folders, then there is no problem.
It is as if the copying is happening too fast and the controller of the Source drive is giving up.
The 4TB samsung SSD is a drive i purchased and bought an external Startech Caddy to put this SSD in. I have used another CADDY and this problem and behaviour happens there too.
Is there anyway to slow down the transfer (so that it is slow, but reliable) or any other idea anyone has.?
It is NOT a heat problem, as that happens after sometime of use, whether i keep it cool or not.
That type of error when transferring data can mean there's a problem at the USB level. If it's plugged into a hub (especially an unpowered one), try plugging it directly into the PC. Hubs (even powered ones) can have power and bandwidth issues that only show up under more intense load, while ports directly on the PC should almost always be reliable.
You could also try changing the buffer size (Preferences / Miscellaneous / Advanced [Filesystem]: copy_buffer_size). Some devices are sensitive to it, but I'd be surprised if that was the issue with a Samsung SSD unless it's a problem with the controllers in the USB caddies, perhaps.
Powered Hub: I have directly connected the USB caddy to the USB port of the laptop. Not using any USB powered hub
Suspecting the USB controller problem, i have had another USB 3.1 caddy. I tried using that and the problem is the same.
I changed the Copy Buffer size from 512kb to 2048kb.It gives the same problems randomly for some files.
I suspect that it is a problem with the Samsung 4TB SSD, where some of the data has got corrupted.
If i find anything else, i will report that. THanks again Leo.
I just installed a 990 Pro and had one hell of a time getting my mobo to recognize the damn thing and was pulling my hair out trying to copy my 980 Pro over to my new drive.
At first, I was using a USB adapter for the NVME drive, and while it technically worked , I was constantly being given read and write errors randomly during the migration, and the PC wouldn't' treat the drive as an actual permanent drive. I'm not sure if you are in this class of issues like I was having, but the only thing that worked for me is to test the NVME ports on my mobo one at a time until I found the single connector that accepted the 990 properly.
I only share this in case other people are having the same issue, I know its not much in the way of help if this doesn't apply, but thought I would put this out there in case someone else having this issue could benefit from my many frustrating hours I wasted trying to fix this issue. I have also had a TON of issues lately with my USB hubs I use on a regular basis. Don't know what has been doing this or what's responsible, but I never used to take the advice seriously when people would say "don't plug the device into a hub, use a port directly from the motherboard.
