when I try to show the drive properties of an external drive (USB, eSATA), DO crashes and Windows explorer too. Any hints are highly appreciated!

Could be a third party extension, once again. There is a tutorial in the FAQs, with some steps you could try.
Do you mean that if you open the Properties in Explorer, Explorer crashes?
