Fb.dll error

installed the trial opus 10.00

after running opus and going to control panel I get a fb.dll error and non of my control panel options will load.

This is repeatable.

Create system restore point before installing Opus file manager.

run installer, run program, reboot and go to "control panel" fb.dll file not found appears and "control panel" programs will not run.

any thoughts.

Please try the Opus_SetDllDirectory_Disable.reg registry setting in the attached zip. Double-click the .reg file, then reboot.

If it doesn't help, you can restore things back to normal using the other reg file in the zip.

The normal mode is more secure, but breaks a handful of 3rd party DLLs, so maybe that's what's going wrong.

Opus_SetDllDirectory.zip (681 Bytes)

(Update April 2013: Alternatively, with Opus 10.5.1 and above, you can set Preferences / Miscellaneous / Advanced: dlldir_security = False and then reboot. Opus will set the registry value for you.)

FWIW, fb.dll seems to be part of AutoDesk Inventor, and this thread may offer an alternative solution: forums.autodesk.com/t5/Autodesk- ... -p/3277453

Interesting.

This is a new machine. I have Inventor 2013 installed, and just tried to install Opus 10 when the fun began.

I have Inventor 2011 installed on a second machine and have Opus 10 installed on that machine as well and no issues.

So should I run this registry setting first and then install Opus 10 or install Opus 10 and run this registry change?

Jim

It shouldn't matter, just make sure you reboot after double-clicking the .reg file.

I have the same problem on my system. I have Autodesk Inventor installed and often get this error regarding fb.dll when opening the recycle bin and some control panel items. My last laptop had the same issue but the .reg file provided fixed things up. My new laptop is not responding the same way. I have tried using the .reg file as advised and also tried changing the setting in preferences but the error still occurs frequently. The Autodesk forum has no solution.

What else can I do to fix this?

Disabling Autodesk's shell extension is the only alternative solution we can offer, since the error is coming from inside of Autodesk's code, they seem to be doing something wrong (and potentially unsafe), and we don't have access to their source code.

Autodesk are in a better place to debug it, as it's their extension going wrong and only they have the source code. Since their code is apparently looking for DLLs in an unsafe / incorrect way, they should want to fix (or at least investigate) this even for situations where the fb.dll error doesn't occur (e.g. within Explorer).

If you wish to disable the Autodesk shell extension(s), you can use a tool such as ShellExView or AutoRuns.

Hey guys,

Old thread I know - but wanted to let you know that my work-around for this was to use ShellExView (as per Leo's suggestion) - and disable the "Autodesk Inventor Part" shell extension.

I had the same issue, Windows 8.1 x64, Inventor 2016.

Interestingly... Autodesk released no updates/patches for Inventor 2016. So hoping for a fix from them is a bit of a dead end.

Thanks Leo!

----EDIT----

Spoke too soon, updates are available for Inventor 2016 - will post back if any of them fix the FB.dll issue.
