Finding an empty 'space' to actually drop a file into

Like with either the Base Explorer or within DO, I have always had an issue with ensuring that when I actually do the dropping of the 'drag and drop', it's not always easy to find an empty spot to release the mouse button over to ensure it doesn't drop the file/folder into another folder or or on top of another item.

Is there a tip or thing I am missing that would make this a much easier endeavor?

Turn off Preferences / File Displays / Mouse / Allow drag and drop into sub-folders. You can still drop into sub-folders by holding down a key (ctrl = copy, shift = move) but by default sub-folders won't act as drop targets.
