Folder and file labels central location

If I go to a folder, click on tools/folder options and go to the label tab. I setup a criteria and it works great. And lets say I do something similar to 3 other folders. I thought if I went to preferences/folders/folder format all 4 folders would show up there, so If I want to get rid of the format, I can do it from one central location instead of trying to remember where I had put in custom labels and formats.

If i set up the formats directly in the preferences/folder format, it will do the same thing as doing it via the tools menu, and will show up in one place, making it easy for me to delete them after if I wish to.

One other thing I noticed is that if I create a folder format via the tools menu to lets say set a green label for files created within the last hour. I save it and it works. If i go back one folder it will show the folder name in green (thought i told to to make files within the folder green, not the folder itself. Then I click into the folder again, and nothing is green. I go back to check folder prefs and there is nothing set. it is like it did not save it once i left the folder. Not quite sure what is going on with that.

If i do the same thing under folder format/path format... then the settings stick. i also would have thought that if i did a folder format outside of the preferences, it would show up in preferences/path format after.

I know that this is probably confusing. Sorry I cannot really express myself properly.

Changes made under Folder / Folder Options are temporary to the current window/tab if you just click OK. You need to click Save in that dialog if you want to save the changes for the current path.

If you click Save, they'll appear in Preferences.

good to know.

With labels, does it work similarly? I can right click and set a label for a folder or file. It saves it and i can go in and out. Is there a central place that it shows up in if i wish to see all the labels I created? I know i can set them if I go to preferences/label assignments. But that only shows up if i set them in there. If i set a label by right clicking a folder/file the only way I can delete the label is to find it again and remove the label that way.

Labels applied to a file or folder directly will be stored globally, either in your configuration or in NTFS ADS metadata, depending on the settings in Preferences.

I see now. I had it set to store to the NTFS. However, I had set a label that way on an file on an external drive, but when I put that drive on my other computer, the label was not there anymore. Not quite sure why it would show on the computer that generated it and not on the other computer if it was set to be stored in NTFS

Is the drive NTFS? Externals are often formatted with something else.

If the label is a custom one (not one of the stock/built-in ones) then the other machine would need the label definition copying over to it as well, otherwise it would see the label but not know what it means.
