Foxit PDF Preview not working since update

Ever since the last update for Foxit PDF Viewer my DOPUS preview window will not preview PDF docs. At the top of the viewer pane it says "Foxit PDF Preview Provider (XP) (32-bit). This header was there before and after the update. I need to get my PDF preview back - what do I do?
Thanks,
Dave

Does it work in the preview panel of File Explorer?

Yes, the preview works in File Explorer.

If a FoxIt update broke things, you may need to ask them for help. That said, I tried the latest version of FoxIt last week and it was working OK then. I can try a newer version if the update that broke things was very recent; let me know which version you have.

Reinstalling PDF viewers often fixes problems like this and is the first thing I would try.

You can also check under Preferences / Viewer / Plugins, select ActiveX + Preview + Office + Web and click Configure. That will tell you which PDF preview handler Opus is using. FoxIt installs two handlers (for some reason), so it may be worth trying the other one if their "XP" one isn't working.

It could also be your antivirus blocking Opus from loading the newer FoxIt DLL, while it didn't object to the older DLL and doesn't mind Explorer loading it. We've seen that explain differences between things working in one program and the other before. Or it could be antivirus blocking the Opus viewer pane/process (docsvw32.exe) from accessing the PDF file itself, which often happens with "privacy" software that blocks processes that aren't on a whitelist from accessing documents.

Failing all else, you could try an alternative PDF viewer. Others known to work in the viewer pane are Adobe Reader, PDX-Change and Sumatra. (With Sumatra, it doesn't install the preview handler by default; click Options in the installer and select it there.)

Hi Leo,
The version I'm using is the latest version v11.0.0.49893.
I uninstalled and reinstalled a clean download - no change.
I played with the settings on the Viewer Plugins - unchecking the XP version resulted in inconsistent behavior in the viewing window - sometimes it showed code, or nothing, or a thumbnail view.
I'm not sure how to determine whether my Windows 10 default antivirus is blocking anything. Not much transparency here. I found that MalwareBytes had installed a trial premium version that had taken over but my search there came up empty handed - no flagging of docsvw32.exe as a problem.
Dead in the water. Is there a way to use another viewer for PDF files? Doesn't seem like it needs to be Foxit since it isn't opening the app to view in DOPUS.
Thanks Leo,
Dave

You'd need to also add the .pdf extension to the other FoxIt viewer in the list, assuming there is one.

Yes, just install one of:

  • Adobe Reader (note: Reader, not Acrobat)
  • PDF-XChange Viewer
  • Sumatra PDF

If you go with Sumatra, note that it doesn't install a preview handler by default. Click Options in its installer and you can choose it there.

I tried all combinations of the Foxit viewers with no success. I installed PDF-XChange Viewer since it was lightweight. That worked - I can view PDF's in the DOPUS viewer now.
Thanks Leo,
Dave
