The editor in a single pane mode (without the preview) is too narrow and shows distracting text from the main page.
Please add an option to make it hide all the main page text so I can only see the text I'm typing

This feedback should probably be directed to Discourse themselves.
A border around the editor box would help as an easy improvement. There is no delineation in this situation which looks janky and unfinished (there is a shadow, but on the dark theme the shadow is basically invisible so not useful).
If you're tech-savvy and know CSS, install Stylish addon/extension and you can change the appearance of any page. Stylish injects user CSS into page, basically it is to CSS what Tampermonkey, Greasemonkey is to JS.

Thanks, that's what I ended up doing with this form, that just leaves the bad design shown to everyone else, and unfortunately user scripts have poor support on smartphones (where the mobile form is stuck, so I can't see what I'm replying to, and the min button doesn't work, so scrolling around the bigger desktop form is sometimes better) 
and break from time to time even on desktop because web instability reasons
