Galaxy S4 MTP Transfers

I have a Galaxy S4 and using Opus 10.5.2.0 and always have had problems working with files and folders - phone and MicroSD card - via MTP on Windows 7 x64. Quite often Opus will seem to hang when an error pops up and I try cancelling or skipping. The only way to quit the operation is to kill Opus' task or disconnect the USB cable from the phone. I never seem to have this problem from Windows Explorer.

Some of the error messages look like these...

I have read a few topics and found there is a "temporary" work-a-round which I will try, I just hope you can fix these bugs so Opus can work with MTP better in the future.

Preferences / Miscellaneous / Advanced: mtp_enable = False

Problems too with my HTC One. If I need to copy files I go back to the Win 8 explorer.

Even with mtp_enable = False?

That seems to have fixed my slow copy issues. Weird though as the HTC One is an MTP device......

Hmm the side effect of that 'fix' though is that the DCIM\100MEDIA folder (on the phone) now displays in thumbnail mode only, I'm unable to change to any other view mode as the options are greyed out.

It doesn't disable MTP support entirely, it makes Opus use Explorer's MTP support instead of its own:

"This option can be used to disable the internal support for MTP (portable) devices. When turned off, devices will be accessed by a hosted Windows Explorer view."

(Sometimes turning it on is better, sometimes it's not. Some devices seem very particular about how they are accessed.)

Right, at least it helps on file transfers which was for me the problem area.

I have had no such problems. I am keen to help reproduce the issue. Is it copying files, big ones, little ones, moving, from folder to folder, to/from the PC?

Very slow copying and timing out. In the end though I had to set it back to true as false proved to be limiting with respect to lister view types.

After setting mtp_enable = False "Opus" seems to be working okay. However I am curious to know if these MTP issues with Opus are going to be looked in to? After reading through the forum MTP seems to be hit-or-miss with a lot of devices and I would rather work with MTP and Opus together than defaulting back to Explorer.

They'd be looked into a lot quicker if people would answer the questions they've been asked instead of ignoring them.

What have I missed?

davea asked some good questions above.

Just in case it wasn't clear, these are the questions he asked:

[ul]
[li]does it happen when copying or moving, or both?[/li]
[li]does it happen with big files, little files, or both?[/li]
[li]does it happen when copying/moving from the PC, or to the PC, or both?[/li][/ul]

Note that in the past we went and bought a Galaxy S3 specifically in response to some people complaining of similar problems, and we were never able to reproduce any of the issues. David has an S4 and says he is unable to reproduce any issues either. MTP works perfectly on all the devices we have tested with.

It may be something related to exactly what you're doing, or to your computer, or to other software you have installed on the phone - we don't know. This is why we want more information, and if the people with this problem don't provide any then we're not going to be able to do anything about this.

In my experience it has done it for both and during mass delete operations - to a 64GB SD card (have not tried to reproduce this directly to the phone)

It does do it for both but mainly it's reproducible when there are lots of files been worked with. I can pretty much guarantee if I try selecting and copying something like I did the last time I had this problem which, was around 500+ files and 500KB to 1.5MB in size it would cause an error.

I can't think of a time when I've had a problem copying one or two files before. Even large 3+GB files have been copied over fine. However every once in a while Opus seems to "loose" the contents of a folder and I have to refresh, go up a directory then back in or unplug and replug in the phone again to find the files. The MTP drive doesn't report being disconnected though.

I have only had this problem appear when copying to the GS4. I have never really needed to mass copy lots of files and/or folders back to the PC before.

Do you guys have encryption enabled on your phone and/or SD card?

I don't know what you guys have tried or done before either but I'm happy to work together to try and help solve this problem to make Opus better for everyone.

Thanks for the information!

So you have only seen this when copying to the SD card, not the phones internal storage?

Do you have encryption enabled on your phone / card? If so, how exactly did you do that?

I only mass copy to my 64GB Samsung SD card, never tried directly to the phones internal storage because of the limited space. I can't say if the problem can be replicated when directly to the phones internal storage, sorry.

You can find the encryption settings under...

Settings -> Security -> Encryption ->

...there you will find options to encrypt the phone and an option for the external SD card. I have tried with the SD card decrypted and I still have the same problem, note the phone was left encrypted.

This is not a fault particular to Opus (just a note for users here if reading) as it happens in Explorer but when the SD card is encrypted file operations are naturally a lot slower especially when writing to the device. I don't think the Exynos 5 Octa 5410 CPU features any AES instructions to speed things up.

I have given my SGS4 SD Card a total flogging. I only have a small card and it only has about 100meg free on it. However I have put on it numerous files and copied them off and deleted them. I have tried it with the MTU both on and off. It has only shown an error when it ran of space. (hardly Dopus's fault).

This is a great excuse to get a 64GB monster.

Has anyone else been able to replicate this problem?
