I use explorer view and in the folder tree there's a folder with my first name on it which is a duplicate of the folder with my name under "users." Can I just delete it? Is is a virtual folder like a library.

No, don't delete that; you would delete your user folder if you did.
In Preferences - Listers - Folder Tree there is a drop-down which lets you set where the tree begins. You can use that to prevent the user-profile folder from appearing in the tree, although it will also cause the other folders at the same level as it to be hidden as well.
I believe there are plans to allow you to show/hide particular parts of the tree more easily in the future.
