Using XP I have changed several folder icons in details mode. It's not really a DOpus thing it affects both the Explorer and Directory Opus.
I just click on the desired folder, select PROPERTIES, then tick the CUSTOMIZE tab and at the bottom of that click the CHANGE ICON button to select a new folder icon. That creates or modifies a hidden file in that folder named Desktop.ini which contains the icon info.
On the same subject but with a different twist, it would seem logical that I could just copy that same Desktop.ini file from one folder to the next to quickly change the folder icons for many folders to be the same icon, but it rarely seems to work. So I assume the folder icon usages must be stored in the registry at the time the Desktop.ini file is created.

I know it can be done in this time consuming way
And this is not an option for me ... have a lot of folders and that would take up to much time to change alll icons in this way.
Thanks anyway!

There is currently NO way to change the default folder icon, i tried it with several ways and none work.
The answer is Yes
I have achieved this on my winXP system as follows by following JohnZeman's lead, namely: I just click on the desired folder, select PROPERTIES, then tick the CUSTOMIZE tab and at the bottom of that click the CHANGE ICON button to select a new folder icon. That creates or modifies a hidden file in that folder named Desktop.ini which contains the icon info.
Note that the desktop.ini file has attributes of hidden and system.
You can copy this this file to another folder. I have found that you need to set the receiving folder's attributes to have an attribute of read - the desktop.ini then works and applies the mod to the folder.
An example desktop.ini file contains the following content:
[.ShellClassInfo]
IconFile=%SystemRoot%\system32\SHELL32.dll
IconIndex=131
Note that you may have to refresh the lister display to get the new icons to display. Also, the refresh of the Folder Tree is more problematic and may need the lister window to be closed and re-opened - Dopus appears to cache the icons (or something) and not refresh them immediately.
Hope this helps, if somewhat belatedly
Nice discovery logrunner! Your trick also works fine on my machine, in just a few seconds I changed all the folder icons in my photos directory from the default icon to camera icons.
By the way, for anyone else looking to do this I might mention that setting the receiving folder's attributes to Read Only means using the DOpus SetAttr command, not Properties.
