High CPU usage due to PGP when viewing folders

Hello,

on my laptop at my office I experience the following behavior:

Sometimes DOpus rises to 50% system usage, i.e. one complete core on my dual-core machine. This occurs mainly when I view folders over the network. There is nothing in common when I encounter this, i.e. no special files, etc. Looking into the thread details from ProcessExplorer I see that the CPU usage is caused by a part of PGP.

Only way to reduce system usage is to complete shutdown DOpus from the taskbar icon.

PGP we use with "Whole Disc Encryption" and I cannot disable this. After some investigation I can reproduce the behaviour by accessing one particular folder. From that action I took a log by ProcessMonitor and could sent if requested.

Regards

Doesn't look like Opus is using the CPU at all there. PGP is.

I expect something turned on in your lister is causing Opus to open all the files in that folder (e.g. to populate the description or width or similar columns, or a music/video playtime counter on the status bar, or similar), and opening the files is causing PGP's disk encryption to do a lot of work.

I'm a Symantec PGP Technician tasked with looking at multimedia that included questions about PGP. What version of PGP Desktop do you have installed? It sounds like you are managed by our PGP Universal Server product, is that correct? Have you had your Universal Server admin's submit a technical case for this issue?

I did see that is a PGP dll but DOpus must be triggering it somehow. Explorere does not show that behaviour. How can I pinpoint it? There is nothing special in the columns

The version of PGP Desktop is 10.0.2.0. How it managed I am not sure/do not know. Submitting a technical case to the IT is useless. DOpus is not offically supported, therefore they dismiss theses cases right away :frowning:. That's why I tried to ask here.

You said you had to have it installed, so I was guessing your organization uses the PGP Universal Server to manage the PGP Desktop. Perhaps these are standalone seats though? 10.0.2 had some issues with it, and I'd highly recommend an upgrade. If this is a standalone seat, you should be able to go to fileconnect.symantec.com and get the PGP 10.2 MP4 release, which has quite a few bug fixes in it. If you don't know your serial number, you'd have to contact customer care for that. If you're managed by the server, you'd have to wait until your Universal Server admin team decided to upgrade the server, which would then allow you to upgrade your PGP Desktop client

do you really need this dll?

This is my business laptop and therefore will not tamper with the tools installed by our IT. Not in this case at least

Actually, Ydex brings up a very good point. If your organization is not using the Netshare feature of PGP Desktop, then disabling that dll will cause no harm to the way PGP Desktop functions. I've even had some customers do a customized install where the Netshare dll's are not installed at all. I would check with your admin's and show them the article that Ydex linked to, and see if they approve of disabling the dll

I unregistered the dll and it seems to be fine. Will keep on that and come back if necessary. For the time being consider this as solved. Thanks to all for the support.

Much appreciated, EncryptionDan.

It gives a really good impression of Symantec/PGP that you go out of your way to find and help people, even here in another forum. Just wanted to say thanks from us as well.

Some company care, some don't. Some companies prosper, others die

Thanks all, this is a new project, we appreciate the great feedback
