How to auto-rename when copying files to the same folder

If I select some files, right-click them and drag-drop them into the same (original) folder, Windows File Explorer will automatically change the name. So MyFile.txt would change to MyFile_Copy.txt for each file you've selected. This is usually perfectly ok with me. Directory Opus may be able to do that, but it seems the default behavior is to ask me for every file, which is a royal pain. As for the wild card feature, it really does not work the way I think it should and I still don't want to stop to have to tell it what to do. Is it possible to just have it work exactly like Windows File Explorer. As mentioned, that's completely fine with me.

you'd probably want to use the Copy WHENEXISTS=rename command.

When it asks, if you click the drop-down arrows on the Replace and Skip options, there are options in the menus to rename all files that clash, and similar.

You can also hold down the key(s) next to the menu items to access the same thing directly from the main button, without opening the menus.

If you don’t want to be asked, even for the first file, then the argument PassThePeas mentioned is the way to go, and you can add it yo the drag & drop event via Settings > File Types > All Files And Folders. (Let us know if you want to do that but need more detail.)

There are no drop-downs associated with the dialog. I will check into what PassThePeas mentioned. Thanks to both of you.

Confirmed on my side too : when you just right click a bunch of selected files and drag and drop on the same folder, you get a short popup menu (copy/create shortcut) and then just a minimized version of the more usual copy conflict dialog (and it has no dropdowns):

Wow, yeah, some help with that would be good. I mean, this is a powerful replacement for File Explorer and I recommend it to people, but I'd say most people don't dig too deep, so the power results in not-so-easy interfaces, at times. I'm a developer and a common answer is "well, then, you should be able to figure this out blah, blah, blah, blah, blah." Sure, and I've got fifty other tools to figure out, and emerging tech, and project deadlines, and I try to make my software as easy as possible for my users. So, as I developer, I'd suggest that some common solutions for people to choose would be good. Like here. "Make it work like Windows File Explorer" might be a good choice. Because it's what people are used to and may be all they need. Seems like in this case, the std. File Explorer behavior should be the default. I remember being a bit flabbergasted the first time I did this and was presented with a file-by-file rename instead of an auto rename. The ability to customize is great and probably quite valuable to some, but I'm generally just wanting a backup of a file before I do some other operation, so the Windows behavior is fine. How can I achieve that?

Oh, that's kind of weird. You mentioned the popup menu and I thought "what? No." then I checked it out. Yes. I guess it's so automatic, I was forgetting it. I'm not sure changing the std. File Explorer for this operation and making it the default in Directory Opus was a good decision. Seems to me like this is a case where the File Explorer behavior is most desired, with custom options available for those needing something more. Thanks for your input.

You can get the same behaviour as Explorer by holding the Ctrl key down and drag/dropping the file with the left button.

If you want that to happen from the right button drop menu as well, you'll need to change the command it runs.

  • Go to Settings / File Types, and double-click All files and folders to edit it.
  • On the Drop Menu tab, double-click the Copy Here function to edit it.
  • Change the command to copy renamewhensame.

Ok, done. Thank you. Very powerful product you have created. It might behoove me to spend a little more time learning some of the features, but I can never think of anything I might need beyond what I use. Probably there are some things, however. It's just the old "I have so many other things going on" situation. Kind of like how I use DBeaver. Really powerful. Have learned some things there, but it has a lot of depth, also, that I have not yet plumbed.
