How to display file type icon instead of the icon of the app it opens with?

In the Details File Display Mode, there is a setting to Display Icons. With this enabled it shows the icon of the app the file will open with (by default). For example, if Adobe Acrobat is my default PDF reader, it show's Acrobat's app icon. If I change my default PDF reader to FoxIt, then it show's FoxIt's app icon.

Is there a way to have it show the File Type icon (set in File Types) for that type of file instead so that it doesn't matter what app it will open with, the icon will always be the same for that type of file?

The app that opens the file is what defines the file type’s icon in Windows.

It’s probably also being overridden via Open With or Choose Default Apps in Windows, in which case changing the icon may require editing the registry. You may also find that the registry settings get changed back when the software involved is updated.

(This isn’t specific to Opus. File Explorer etc. get their icons via the same API.)

Thanks Leo, I was afraid of that. It would be great if Opus had the option to use the file type icon instead so that the icon is independent of the app it opens with allowing us to make more aesthetically pleasing icons. So, please consider that a suggestion. Thanks!

This can be done with a label.

Go to Preferences / Labels.

Define a label with the icon of your choice in Label Definitions, then assign it to the file type with a filter label in Label Assignments.
