I just want the drives and favourites in the folder tree showing without them opening

There's a lock button at the top of the folder tree (next to the close button) which makes it ignore what the current folder is. Turn that on, then use Settings > Set as Default Lister to save that state as your new default.

The tree has started opening again

When you do which actions?

Is the lock still on?
