I cannot find a shortcut for opening the bookmarks, center mouse button or mouse wheel preferred but other possible. Is there a way to customize this? I considered creating a custom button and add a script but could not find an appropriate command. Is there a way to do this?

If you want it on a mouse button when clicking the file display, adding it to the file display background menu (the one that opens when you right-click the file display) is the easiest thing.
It can be edited via Settings > Customize Toolbars > Context Menus. You can copy the menu item which generate the list of favorites from the default Favorites menu.
