I can see the first 8 characters form the file names

Hi
I have a problem: DOpus shows only the first 8 characters of my file and directory names.
I'm using:
windows 7 profesional
Directory Opus 9.5.4.0.3806.x64
Please help

File listing suddenly changed to short 8.3 names

When I hear this about people having this symptom - I usually suggest that you check your system for viruses and malware...

A.) I would download the Ultimate Boot CD for Windows (UBCD4Win)... it runs completely "offline" after booting from the CD. A real life-saver for systems that have become un-usable - but good for general "clean-up and offline repair" of functional systems as well.

 • run the 'config/update' for all anti-virus and anti-spyware definitions for the AV/AS apps included with UBCD4Win
 • build and burn the CD, boot from it, and run all the anti-virus and anti-spyware utilities

B.) I would also defrag your entire system, I prefer Auslogics Disk Defrag, as it's free and whose portable versions runs very well from UBCD4Win - and the Aussies apparently make good software (wink to Jon and Greg)...

C.) Make sure you have all the latest MS Updates applied toy your Windows install...

D.) Lastly, there are various 'registry cleaner' apps out there... some of which probably cause as many problems as they might solve... but which can help repair registry deficiencies as well. If none of that helps... you might want to try reformatting and reinstalling your system.

You could try all the things Steje suggested or, alternatively, get rid of the cracked version of Opus and buy a copy.

I never said any of those things would fix the 8.3 filenames... :smiling_imp: - I just said:

And I stand by my advice - all the things I mentioned were absolutely valid suggestions... Anyone using a pirated version of Opus is presumably using 'other' pirated software - and by doing so, leaving themselves open to all manner of nastiness - right? I'm sure there are plenty of people out there who have been led by the promise of ~free commercial software, only to find their systems compromised... and we're all about helping people here, right :sunglasses: ?

But CLEARLY... you're right - I was indeed remiss. I should have included:

E.) Purchase a legal copy of Opus...

Well it did seem to be implied that this would fix the issue.

Besides, no-one should waste any time on a pirate in these forums.

Maybe only users with a valid license should be able to register and guests should only be able to post in one subforum (if question is useful, it could be moved in to help&support).

We don't have an easy way of tying forum accounts to licence or evaluation codes so I think doing that would add too much hassle for legitimate users.

Ok, but I don't understand why users who obviously use a pirated copy don't get banned? These 8.3 posts are a pain

As admin I would contact GPSoft about drackemoor, who's contact-data can be found at his webseite, to legit his copy of DO! If legal, welcome. If not, bye!

Not really. They turn up rarely, a couple a month perhaps, and they provide light relief for some of us, especially those who delight in being "narky" with anyone who upsets their delicate sensitivities.

That's another reason for welcoming the light relief. It is nice to watch the self-righteous indignation leaping into action.

If these posts upset you, what about those who turn up in much greater frequency expecting free programming support? I know, I have done it, but I do try hard to work out what I want to do before prevailing upon Leo's time, time that he should be putting into earning cat food.

Reason for pain: Too much brazenly idiots, not just idiots you can leave behind you like in good old times!

How about we ask Steve and Leo to create a new sub-forum called "Hall of Shame"... they can move all 8.3-like posts into it, and do some phpBB search voodoo to exclude posts in the sub-forum from searches . Dancing kittens background anyone...?

Great idea!

I don't see what that would achieve, other than more work for the admins.

Lately, seems like we had more posts about 8.3 posts than actual 8.3 posts... If you don't like the 8.3 posts, just ignore 'em.

(Occasionally they are legitimate, too. e.g. The one linked in the 2nd post was from a legit customer, confirmed by GPSoft. Many of them aren't but some are.)

Less pain than the discussion of them.

Yeah, OK, I'm guilty now, but I agree with Leo on this. It's easy enough to ignore these painful posts (including this one)!

So why don't you?!!

Because we all must get 'some' sense of stupid amusement at responding to posts about complaining about these posts...

Ok I think this has gone on long enough
