Images in marked pictures collections are in danger

Hello there!

Luckily I noticed again - before doing something really bad, that the viewer when marking images and it's putting them into marked images collection, will throw images into an existing collection if names of the folders match from previous marking procedures.

For some situation this might come in handy, but for regular use, I find this quite dangerous, since I was about to delete all the marked images and I would have deleted much much more if I did not look closely to how many items are about to be deleted.

It seems the viewer should create a new collection each time (adding "..(x)" suffix maybe) or using the whole path as the name for the collections it auto-creates?

What do you think?
Thanks for reading, tb! o)

You could add %D to the Marked Pictures collection name so it includes the date each time.

Wouldn't help if you marked things in the same folder, or two folders with the same name, on the same day and didn't notice, but makes it less likely to happen when the previous collection was made a while ago and more likely to be forgotten.

A viewer script could also warn you if there's already a collection the first time a file is marked, or rename the collection when the viewer closes to "archive" it, perhaps.

Thanks, I tend to mass-organize photos after shooting for some weeks, so unfortunately the %D to add the date would not help here.

But now that you mentioned the custom collection name field in the preferences, it seems adding the possibility to enter %p to allow adding of the parent folder name or %c for complete path would be the most easiest thing for me and others. Having some folders which share the same name is not something rare. I guess others use folder names like "dropouts", "pool", "tmp", "tobesorted" or something as well, which reside in an actual folder of images which is named with a speaking name. Some tired or unexperienced user is about to get in in trouble with the current default collection naming.

I'm not so keen on adding another script here, since that wouldn't be that easy to do, probably does not blend very well and others will still run into this without it.

Btw: I still find it questionable to not be able to make use of the older marking system (via checkboxes) at the same time the "collection marking" feature is enabled. It would also cure this problem for me, because I don't need persistent marking for this kind of action. I find the marked images collection handy for other things though, so I keep that enabled. Entering the prefs to toggle the behaviour is not something I want to do from minute to minute, so why not allow both systems to work simultaneously?

Using the "star" in the upper left corner would indicate "collection marked" and using the well known "checkmark" icon would indicate "checkmarked" in the current file display. There are enough keys on the keyboard and "INS" could be assigned to what it was before v12 came out. I could use another script here maybe as well, but labels and other icons only show while the viewer is un-fullscreened.
