There may already be a way to accomplish what I'm looking for but I'm not sure.
Often I find myself looking for files in a certain range of values based on the sort field. But when you have a directory of thousands of files it can still be overwhelming fi you aren't sure of the specific file data you're seeking.
What I've seen on websites and in apps are essentailly shortcuts to the items first letter in the case of a name sort. You could scroll through thousands of files or have an indexing toolbar that would allow you to select your starting letter or date or time or whatever and then present the files that index to that letter. Unlike a filter it wouldn't obscure before and after items.
My initial thought is that it would run vertically rather than horizontally but should be an option for users how they want it to appear.
