Now, as seen, I got a metadata folder with an image I’m using as label status icon (the good old game preservation program seal), which I would love to be able to display overlayed on the thumbnails:
So, I’m guessing either I’m not doing things properly, or this is not implemented, so I’ve come here to ask about it, and in the event DOpus doesn’t have this capability yet, I’d open a feature request.
I had to read this a few times to work out what you had done, though I love it. I thought for a moment you wanted to overlay the rating stars on each, not actually the status icon.
In the preferences (under Icons) you’ll find a notice saying “Windows supports only a small number of icon overlays, making them unreliable for indicating state. As a workaround, you can add icons to the status column that indicate the same information. This is only available for specific overlays.”
This is what you have done with your GOG icon. But sadly, that status icon is more meant to go in its own column, like this:
…rather than being overlaid on a thumbnail or icon. That “Overlay thumbnail with icon overlay (if any)” option in your picture is really meant for Windows shell overlays, such as from cloud servers, for the reason above.
A pity, because it’s a really great idea, but sadly (to my knowledge) not supported by Windows, and therefore not by DOpus.
Aw, it is such a shame, it would be lovely if label icons could be overlayed over thumbnails, cause in thumbnails view there’s no columns shown that I could somewhat use to see, at a glance, which of the games are part of the preservation program…
Windows has been declining so hard in terms of personalization capabilities since the aughts, it’s so sad.
Thank you for your reply, guess I’ll have to make do with the differently colored text format of the labels.
Yes, I am using styles to show thumbnail images instead of the standard folder icon, as shown in the screencaps. What I’d love is to have the image I’ve set as status icon of the label “Good Old Game” overlayed over that. This is a quick and dirty photoshop of what I’d like to achieve:
I have to apologize, as I went back and gave a second thought to what you wrote, and went and tested it, and I believe you’re onto something here. This is the config I’m testing now:
So you’re onto something there, and it comes real close to what I want, if only the Thumbnail Style Image and the Specific Thumbnail File could switch positions, it’d be perfect.
Now, other considerations:
This Thumbnail Style should be only applied to folders with the “Good Old Game” label (is that possible). As it stands, it is triggered by the folder having a Specific Thumbnail File in it.
If instead I copied (or symlinked) the GOGPP seal image into each folder, and made it the thumbnail, which in turn would show it in the position I want, could I somehow set up the Style Image as the grid.(jpg|png) file inside that same folder?
I am having so much fun with this little puzzle, and I can almost touch victory
If you manually set every folder icon as the thumbnail using the right click and properties you could probably easily set a style to overlay the gog icon. But I think it might be reeeeeeally tedious…
