Labels on USB stick moved between machines

I have Directory Opus 12.8 installed on both my Desktop and Laptop. I have a large number of files on a USB stick, and whilst it was inserted in my Laptop I was able to use the Set Label Color option when right clicking on a file. However when I insert the USB stick into my PC the file labels are not colored, nor is the Set Label Color option available on right click. I have checked what I think are the neccesary switches on the PC but am lost. Any ideas???

USB sticks are usually formatted with FAT32 or exFAT, which don't allow extra metadata to be saved into files as a side-channel (i.e. NTFS ADS).

In that situation, Opus will fall back on saving the labels into the Opus configuration files. This means the labels will only be known on that machine (unless you copy the config, or parts of it, to another machine). It also means the labels, stored in the config, point to particular paths and won't move with the files (e.g. if they are renamed, or if the USB stick is mounted as a different drive letter).

(The options at the bottom of Preferences / Favorites and Recent / Labels also play a part here. It's possible to make Opus behave like this even when using NTFS disks, for example.)

Oh okay. makes sense. I actually read about the NTFS format and thought nah thats okay all my hard drives are formatted to NTFS. Duh, forgot about the USB stick. LOL

Well, you could format your USB stick using NTFS. It works fine.

Yep, did that after initial response. All working firn.
