Launching portable USB from desktop

I have bought a USB license and exported DO to USB and have a few questions:

a) I assumed that it would be a totally portable version (in a way that I cud simply copy the USB-exported DO version,
incl all its subfolders to another pc and run it there), but this seems to be impossible..?
I need to register again?

b) have created a shortcut on the desktop of the other pc (x:\DOPUS\DOPUS.exe, where x is the USB-driveletter),
but that does not work either. DO will not launch.

The one and only way to get the registered version working (without having to re-register) is to launch Windows Explorer
and double click the DOPUS.EXE on the USB-flash drive.

This way, one always needs to launch Explorer first in order to be able to launch DO.

Is this correct ?

Is there a way to launch the USB version without having to launch Explorer ?

thanks

a) USB exports are tied to the USB stick that they were exported to.

A request has been filed to relax this slightly and make it so that that USB stick just has to be inserted (but Opus doesn't have to be run from it), but only recently so who knows when/if that will happen.

b) Try running x:\DOPUS.exe (not x:\DOPUS\DOPUS.exe).

The ability to run your own favourite "stuff" from a USB stick, which can be plugged in more or less anywhere without interfering with the host PC, is very attractive. However, when operating on your own desktop or laptop it makes sense to run off your C: drive - speed, responsiveness, etc.. Like the OP, I'd prefer to run this way so the news that there may be relief on the horizon is very welcome.

So install it on your C: drive. Or do you mean "your" as in your work computer that you don't have installation rights to?

I have installed DOpus on my home PC and created a portable instance on a USB stick. On the same stick I keep Firefox Portable, Thunderbird Portable, Beyond Compare Portable, Password Corral Portable, etc.. Over time I have become a fan of portable vs permanent and as much as possible I avoid installing applications on my home PC. I run my portable applications from subfolders of a top level folder \Utilities. Thus I maintain a C:\Utilities structure on my home PC and \Utilities on my USB stick - which will map to D:\Utilities or E:\Utilities or ... depending on what drive letter is allocated when the stick is plugged into a "foreign" PC.

DOpus is configured to launch these portable applications from buttons. The relative position of each application on the home drive (be that C: or whatever drive letter is allocated when the USB is plugged) is constant. In each case, the DOpus launch command relies on the knowledge that the built-in alias /home will either reference:

C:\Program Files\GPSoftware\Directory Opus (running off a full install)
or
X:\DOpus (running off a USB install where X: is the allocated drive letter)

For example, to launch Password Corral the command is: /home......\Utilities\pc\password4.exe

I keep \Utilities (on the USB) and C:\Utilities in sync as well as \DOpus and C:\Program Files\GPSoftware\Directory Opus. Maintaining a C:\DOpus structure and C:\DOpus.exe, mirroring X:\DOpus and X:\DOpus.exe, would make for more straightforward application launch syntax and DOpus folder synchronisation. Thinking about this (now that I am writing it all down), I suppose I could just uninstall DOpus from the default C:\Program Files\GPSoftware\Directory Opus and reinstall to C:\DOpus. I might just give that a go to see if it does the trick.

Wud like to update this thread.

Many thanks...!!

Yes, this solved the problem indeed.
( Runing x:\dopus.exe instead of x:\dopus\dopus.exe)

Again thanks!
I hope, one day, it will be possible to run it from HD (i.e. not necessarily from USB-stick)

My portable DOpus is exported to a portable HD and works very well from it (far, far faster than from the thumbdrive I used to use). However, despite the appropriate option being set, I can't make a lister open by double-clicking on the desktop (and I can't get used to not being able to!) I'd guess this may be a limitation of a less than complete embedding, but do you know of a way around this limitation of the portable version?

Not sure if it will work but try running this:

X:\DOPUS\dopusrt.exe /dblclk

Where X is your USB drive letter.

Didn't work, sadly.

Is that an alternative way to start portable Opus, or an additional command to run once Opus has been started? (I ask because it didn't appear to do anything if I ran it without Opus running and, er, didn't appear to do anything if I ran it once Opus WAS running.)

I guess the desktop double-click feature is disabled completely for USB installs, in that case.

(Not too surprising as it requires that an Opus DLL is loaded into the desktop process and you wouldn't want to do that with a DLL that's on a disk that might be yanked out.)
