I'm a long time Unix/Linux user where files and directories are not shown in lists separately by type. Windows shows all directories first then files, so older directories still show above newer files and Opus follows this convention.
Can I set Opus to show everything by date regardless whether it's a directory or a file? I'm not finding this option?
You can select to mix files and folders in the Folder Format dialog:

And then set the format to sort by the date column (the Columns tab in the dialog pictured above).

Woo boy, Opus sure is feature dense and complex. But love it. Just trying it out and will have to buy it. I was a dedicated Opus user on the Amiga in the 90s!
