Somewhere yesterday, I suddenly realized I could no longer get a new tab by pressing Ctrl+t.
It had been working since new install the day before.
I was tinking with preferences and customize... but I could not begin to trace back all the stuff I did thru the course of that day... and today for that matter.
In the meantime I've added a 'New Tab' Icon... but much prefer Ctrl+t
So, anyone have an idea what I might have done to cause the loss of Ctrl+t?
Go to Settings / Customize / Keys and see if Ctrl-T is still listed. If not, you can add it back from there as a new hotkey.
In the future maybe it would be a good idea to pay attention to what you're doing during your fiddling and tinkering to avoid mysterious issues like this?
Having gone through similar pain many times I started maintaining a log of preference and customise changes in a text file, complete with my reason for making each change if it is not glaringly obvious. It's easy to maintain and comes in very handy when things like this happen.
You might have hidden the lister menu.
If you have a button in a specific toolbar and that button has a hotkey assigned to it AND you've hidden that toolbar then the hotkey doesn't work.
You can see if a hotkey is tied to a toolbar or to dopus in general. If the type is set to 'hotkey' then hiding that toolbar shouldn't affect the hotkey.

Try this as the command: Go NEWTAB
Did you mean to type 'Go NEWTAB' in somewhere? Or did you expect it to be on the list? If so, I did not
see any opportunity to type something in, and "go NEWTAB" is not on the drop down list. I guess I may
be missing how one is supposed to use the Keys dialog but it appears to me you enter the key combo and
then pick something from the drop down.... is that correct?
Also I forgot to mention that the same time I lost Ctrl+t, the ability to backup thru the places I'd been with alt+left arrow, disappeared too. I wish I could remember what I was doing when it disappeared but I can not, and the way I noticed it was on an attempt to use it. I do use both every day but some time must have elapsed between me doing
something to it, and noticing the two functions missing.
I had both things in fine working order from the moment I installed (which was just 3 days ago) so it's clear as a bell that I did something to mess both of those up, but what could even do such a thing?
Any one have any more ideas how to fix this... I really miss both of those.... alt+left arrow is felt the most though. Never realized how much I depend on it.
Like I said. You most probably have hidden the menu lister toolbar. Those hotkeys you mention are tied to that toolbar. Ctrl+F for find now probably doesn't work either. Just recover that toolbar.

Ahaaa, ok, that solved one of missing items... If I put the 'Location' tool bar on, then arrowing back works.
But, putting all the available tool bars on did not solve Ctrl+t... its still missing.
Let me explain what I did... I think I know now what I was doing when this happened.
I've been running with 'Menu' and 'Location' toolbars active. I really use the location box extensively but that is the only thing I really use on the 'Location' toolbar.
In a reply to me, 'jon' had posted how to add a location box to any of the menus, and I like to have as little as possible at the top of the browser window. So, I added the Location box to 'Menu' toolbar and hid the 'Location' tool bar.
Somewhere in those changes.... I must have disabled Ctrl+t... but have no idea where.
Egad, I see now how it works... and have recovered ctrl+t, there is a really obvious place to type in what
someone suggested 'Go NEWTAB'.
The drop down list is the one in the function field RIGHT IN THE SAME PLACE YOU CAN TYPE STUFF IN, how I missed it is beyond me.... a deep seated vein of stupidity that I have spent 70 yrs trying to shake....posting.php?mode=quote&f=3&p=114155#
As already stated, you can add Ctrl+T back as a hotkey.
Yes, I see now... thank you jon and especially thanks for being so patient. I really appreciate it.
From Customize --> Keys you can see which keys come from Toolbars and which are Hotkeys and it is here that you would define a new hotkey if that is what is required.
Ctrl+T is defined on the default Menu toolbar.

Thank you, nothing like images to help it soak in.
I still have one question though. Where does on find a list of the possible commands/functions. The drop down list, of course, but for example .. on my setup 'Go NEWTAB' was not on that drop down.
I've also lost the ability to create a new folder with 'Ctrl+n', I'd like to make it a global hot key. How would I go about finding the command for creating a new folder?
When you create a new hotkey in the command editor, select Advanced mode.Pick the command you want, in this case Go, and then use the Arguments dropdown to refine what you want to do.
Sometimes (actually often, in my experience) the command editor is surprisingly easy to navigate even when you don't know exactly what you are looking for.
