Making a junction, quick and dirty

Is there a quick, simple way to make a junction? I just need to do this once or twice for specific folders, so I'd rather not get into programming buttons, etc.

Excuse my ignorance, but I do not know the basics of executing commands. I know from the online help/manual that this involves "copy MAKELINK=junction" but I do not know how to set up the arguments and issue that command in DO. Or maybe I should just do it from the Windows command line?

Thanks. --David

  • Put the Lister into dual-display mode
  • On the right, navigate to the folder you want to make a junction in
  • On the left, locate the folder you want to make the junction to, and select it
  • Type >copy makelink=junction and press Return.

Thanks. I have set that up, but where do I type the copy command. (Sorry to be so dense -- I don't see a command line box anywhere.) (DO v. 11.15 pro)

Just type into the file display. Pressing > will open a command line field and you type the rest into that.

Ah, that's the secret to issuing a command line -- I could not find that in the documentation -- thanks.

But still, nothing happens when I issue that command (copy makelink=junction)

Does it matter which panel I issue that command in -- I tried both? (In fact, sometimes I can call up the command line box with > and sometimes it does not come up.)

Make sure the last thing you have clicked on before pressing > is the folder you want to make the junction to.

An example...

I've been using a very hand shell extension for this. schinagl.priv.at/nt/hardlinkshel ... nsion.html

Highly recommended

I made a menu in Opus to do it. One less thing to install.

Somewhat tucked away as I need to create junctions about twice a year.

I knew this would be possible Directory Opus.

Is this a standard menu? I couldn't find it in the customize settings.

It's a menu I made myself. The options aren't there by default, as using them without understanding them can cause havoc.

See Making Links and Junctions in the manual for details.

This would make a great standard feature. Of course, so would about a zigillion other thing.
