The "Some movie/music files don't play in Opus" FAQ contains the following paragraph:
"How to make MP3, WMA and WAV play in the viewer pane
For WAV files there is an option Preferences / File Operations / Double-click on Files: Use internal sound player for WAV files. (In versions prior to Directory Opus 9 the option is in a slightly different place: Preferences / Double-Click / Files.) When the option is enabled double-clicking WAV files in Opus will play them in a little sound player window. (The option has no effect on files double-clicked outside of Opus.) You can also access this player with the Play command which can be assigned to the Left double-click events of MP3 and WMA file types, if you like."
(My emphasis)
I have the left-double-click assigned as above, and it works fine.
Is there a way I can invoke the Dopus Play tool to play sound file attachments in Thunderbird messages?
Does it work if you double-click on one on the desktop?
If so, then Thunderbird must be specifically invoking the "open" action rather than the default (wouldn't surprise me.) In that case, you'll need to modify the existing open action rather than create a new one.

However, I did actually change the Open action in the first place, as the NEW button on the Actions tab is greyed out.
Sorry, I meant to say create the new command on the Context Menu tab, not the Actions tab.
On my system, it's actually the Play item that is set as default for WMA, and you will find this listed on the Context Menu tab. Try either editing that, or adding a new item there and setting it as default.

Sorry to be a nuisance, but I'm afraid there must be something else involved. At this point, there is no mention of WMP anywhere in the File Types entries for .MID, .MP3, .WAV or .WMA.
I now have all four file types (.MID, .MP3, .WAV and .WMA opening in the DOpus internal sound player.
What I ended up doing was:
For each file type -
add a NEW action to the Context Menu tab of the File Types dialogue, using the dopusrt.exe command you provided
make that the default
clear out my caches and temp folders
reboot my PC
from DOpus, invoke the Context Menu to play each file type in turn
from DOpus, use double-left-click to play each file in turn
from Thunderbird, use double-left-click to play each file in turn
from the desktop, use double-left-click to play each file in turn
remove the original Play action from the Context Menu tab of the File Types dialogue, and rename my newly added action as Play, leaving it as the default
double-check Context Menu and double-left-click actions for the four different file types from DOpus, Thunderbird and the desktop - all OK!
There are sure to be some unnecessary steps in this list, but I was not about to be caught short for the sake of omitting something I needed.
