Mysterious preferences - why doesn't it work?

Hi,

I've set to show the column size (bytes), creation date & user, but - on one display it will be shown (size bytes) but not on the other (size in KB, MB) and missing columns.

Dopus has been re-started.

Please look on the screen shot.

What is wrong?

Thanks,

PS: Also see the 2nd screen shot - Content Type detection is disabled.

How are you opening the lister?

If it's a saved layout then the columns etc. are saved as part of the layout.

Generally, shouldn't all non-explicitly saved folder formats appear in folder formats configuration tab?
That whould cut down the confusion a bit.

X.

The folder formats tab only lists saved formats.

If it listed temporary ones it'd have to indicate which lister they were in or something... Not really sure how it would help as you can see what the format is by looking at the lister or the Folder Options dialog; the confusing thing is not knowing where it came from.

I've deleted all layouts, restored & saved to the default preferences, restarted DOpus and still have the KB/MB's on the left and the Bytes on the right side (both drive C:\ ) (all other things are restored).

I'm a little bit confused about Listers / Layouts .. to find in preferences / Layouts to save Lister Styles ...

What is what? Sorry for the question but I don't understand when I change the column display it doesn't change.

I've tried to delete my listers/layouts (one saved lister, one saved layout), restored the preferences to the default, saved them, restarted DOpus - and still have the KB/MB on the left, and the Bytes on the right.

Couldn't it be a little bit easier with the preferences?

When I am confused - as computer programmer - how could I recommend this program to my father?

Styles and Layouts perform similar tasks and overlap in many ways, but they aren't exactly the same. Generally you use Styles to change a single window to a new format/view while you use Layouts to remember and later restore multiple windows.

How you are opening the lister? That's the first thing we need to know to track down where the unwanted byte-size column is coming from.

I meant non-temporary formats, like formats saved with styles, layouts, default lister.

I start DOpus via an icon from the desktop. That's it. The only one instance. Not more or less.

I've done my preferences at home and also exported them. I've copied the .dpf & .dps file on my USB, copied the .dpf & .dps files on it's place. Imported both files, and e-started DOpus also ..

and I don't see the columns of the folder as described in my preferences.

So what's wrong with DOpus or with me? :frowning:
(see attached screen shot)

What command does the icon run?

Under Preferences / Layout / Opening Listers untick Initial Folders:

You can still set the initial folders via the other tabs but by not inheriting them from the "default lister" they will not be using any remembered folder format.

I think you could also add the columns and then use Settings -> Set As Default Lister to save them in the "default lister" but I haven't tried that.

I've filed a feature request with GPSoft to change the way this works as it seems confusing without much benefit. If someone wants to use a special Folder Format just for newly opened listers then they can use a layout, so the default lister shouldn't remember its folder format, in my opinion.
