NAS not always appearing in folder tree

I'm running DOpus 9.1.3 on Vista x64 and yesterday I bought a NAS and connected it to my network.

I can access the shares no problem. However, DOpus rarely shows my NAS in the folder tree under the node "Network". Windows Explorer, on the other hand, doesn't have this problem. It always sees it and it appears under its "Network" node.

Right after I first powered on my NAS and it didn't appear in DOpus, I tried hitting Refresh, closing and restarting DOpus, double-clicking on the Network node, but nothing worked.

Then, I went straight to Windows Explorer and my NAS entry was there. I expanded a couple of nodes to test and when I flipped back to DOpus, there it was all of a sudden.

Next, I hit Dual Display and in the second display, the NAS was NOT in the folder tree! :frowning: I tried closing and reopening DOpus, but I was back to the same problem.

So what's up with DOpus? Why is it that Windows Explorer always sees my NAS and lists it under the "Network" node, but DOpus is having issues doing the same?

Thanks.

Does Explorer show it even if you have never navigated to it?

Explorer will automatically add things to the tree if you navigate to them. On the other hand, Opus only shows things in the tree if they can be enumerated (that is, if they are included when you ask list the children for the item above).

e.g. If you reboot the machine, open an Explorer window showing a local folder, then expand the folder tree, do you see the NAS appear there? Or does it only appear in the tree after you manually go to it by typing the path or clicking a direct shortcut to it?

No, I did nothing for it to appear in Explorer. When I launched Explorer, there was my NAS, right under the Network node.

However, one's mind starts to play tricks on oneself when thinking about exactly when did I try the "Start | Run | \nas"? I'm pretty sure I didn't do that before I launched explorer.

But I can't test now because I'm at work. I'll test when I get home.

Just in case I am misstaken, are you saying that just by doing that \ command is enough for it to appear in Explorer?

But what explanation is there for when it finally did show up in DOpus, as soon as I did the Dual Horizontal, the second lister did not show the NAS?

Yup. (So long as Explorer can actually get to \ anyway.)

This aspect of Windows LAN networking is voodoo to me. I've never been able to understand why other machines on my LAN sometimes do and sometimes don't appear when programs enumerate the network. Nor why it takes so long to enumerate the LAN machines sometimes and not others.

Ok, thanks.

I'll test when I get home and will respond with my results.

I got home, powered on my NAS, booted my laptop and now DOpus is consistently displaying my NAS in the folder tree! I'm guessing that both systems just needed a reboot, because I'm having no longer having any issues whatsoever.

I'm a very happy camper!

I had similar problems with my NAS at the beginning. Is it a Linux system? Maybe the Samba server which connects the Linux shares on the NAS has something to do with this? It might also have something to do with the permissions for the shares you install on the NAS. Or maybe DOpus runs in a different security context than Windows Explorer.

But I agree, Windows networking is a mess.

Ah, I forgot to mention: A very helpful tool which helped me a lot for this purpose is the SoftPerfect Network Scanner:

It is freeware but you can donate something.

I totally have no more issues with DOpus and the NAS. Since that reboot, everything has been working like a charm.
