since i have installed adobe 9, opening pdf files in opus takes a long time. the pdf files open quickly in adobe 9 itself
viewing word files, xml files goes fast. just adobe pdf files are slow loading. i have used opus for quite a while and it worked well in the past.
also when i switch from viewing pdf files back to commander it takes a long time, much faster going from viewing files in a folder containing word or xml files.
another thing is that the first pdf file i click on to view, it loads quickly, then the next one views slowly.
i have gone into settings>preferences>viewers and tried checking/unchecking activex+preview+office+web and it doesn't seem to make any difference.
Are you talking about double-clicking PDF files or displaying them in the Opus viewer pane?
OT: Leo your icon makes me miss my Sabatian.. was a black cat. Died from a tumor 9 months ago... sigh
Aww. My cat's had lots of health problems lately but seems to be okay for now (touch wood). It's a shame they don't tend to outlive us.
And one of my cats has broken fang lately Extraction was required.
I'll check with adobe 9 at home.
displaying them in the Opus viewer pane
If they still show up when you've unchecked the ActiveX+Preview+Office+Web plugin can you work out which other plugin is displaying them?
It'll probably be either MultiView (if you've configured it) or the old PDF-ActiveX plugin (which should be deleted with newer versions of Opus).
With the ActiveX+Preview+Office+Web plugin, which software is used to load the PDF files depends on the registry. Essentially the last installed PDF software will "win" and overwrite previous registry settings. So if you want to ensure that Adobe Reader or FoxIT (for example) are used instead of Acrobat itself then reinstalling them should make them replace Acrobat as the system's PDF viewer.
(It may also be worth configuring the ActiveX+Preview+Office+Web plugin and checking that nothing in the Preview Handlers section is configured to handle PDF. Although turning one of those Preview Handlers on, if there are any installed on your system, could be a quick way to make PDFs display quickly again... most of the Preview Handlers so far are not as fully functional as the viewers you get via ActiveX and IE.)
if i uncheck activeX+preview+office+web the pdf does not show
internet explorer (i have 7.0) is shown in the ActiveX+Preview+Office+Web plugin as displaying pdf. Also the Generic ActiveX is shown as displaying pdf. Adobe pdf is unchecked
if i uncheck the generic ActiveX a pdf still displays slowly and moving back to commander view also is very slow.
when i move from commander to opus viewer the first pdf shows quickl, then when i click on a second pdf it shows very slowly
Makes sense.
So (re-)install Adobe Reader or FoxIt (or whatever you want to use) and they should take over as the viewer that the ActiveX plugin uses.
(They'll be picked up by the Internet Explorer line in the plugin's configuration which usually works better than the Generic ActiveX line, although you could try both if you want. Basically, Opus hosts a copy of IE and asks it to display the PDF. It'll usually use the same ActiveX viewer either way but it often works better with IE as a proxy since some ActiveX controls assume they are hosted in IE.)
i don't use adobe reader or foxit. i have adobe 9 installed.
do i need to reinstall adobe 9?
No need to reinstall Acrobat 9 but using that to view PDFs is probably why it's so slow.
You can have Adobe Reader/FoxIt and Acrobat installed at once I believe.
but then i lose all the functionality of adobe 9 in opus. is anyone working on getting adobe 9 and opus to work with each other?
They do work together, don't they?
If it's slow it's probably because Acrobat is a large program unsuitable for use as a viewer. That's what Adobe Reader exists for.
yep, they work but not like previous versions of Adobe. This is definitely much much slower but as i need to work with opus viewer and adobe 9, i'll just keep hobbling along.
a note though to anyone thinking about upgrading from adobe 8 or earlier to adobe acrobat pro extended 9, don't do it if you use the opus viewer. it is not worth the performance hit.
Unless you only use the viewer to view PDFs, of course.
