OSX - NeXTstep features: nice for Directory Opus

Hi,

I'm a former NeXTstep user. I like it very much, but....

Some of the features were very nice and would be a great addon for directory opus (OSX used some as well).

This is a screenshot of what i mean:

NeXTstep Workspace Manager

The above line of icons is an iconic representation of the Favorites Menu in directory opus. The advantage of it being a toolbar is that the user can drag and drop files, directories,... on an icon to copy/move it to that location....

The second line of icons is what is called the 'icon path' and it represents the complete path to your location (using icons). Notice the horizontal scroll bar !!

The columns under that are the way the filesystem is browsed (same as the finder on mac OSX). This representation style has its benefits as well and is really the only one i'm missing in Directory Opus.

Hope you find it worthy of implementing it in Directory Opus. It would make it complete...

Thanks in advance.

Hello,

A few months ago was looking for a way to dig down multiple layers in columns, a bit like on a Mac with OSX.

The the best I found (at the time) was dopus, so bought the licence. Dopus has been updated regularly and now crashes no more.

Yesterday installed Flyakite and also installed a piece of software called NeXplorer, "NeXplorer was originally written to cater to the needs of the NEXTSTEP/OPENSTEP user/developer community for making their experience on Windows less painful. "

Unfortunatly there are performance issues with NeXplorer, plus it is far less versatile than dopus.

Would love to have this type of lister/theme(?) as part of dopus without installing NeXplorer.

Am on my knees begging with 500Euro note(s) in hand.

You can already drag & drop files onto the Opus favourites menu as well as any other toolbar button which goes to a folder. Try it.

Being able to control the folder displayed in one pane by the folder selected in another (a bit like making one file display into a tree) would be a very useful feature and has been talked about a bit before. I hope to see it one day as well.

Being able to have more than two folder displays in a single window would be nice but is probably a lot of work on the GUI side.

"a lot of work on the GUI". I know. You have to see it as a challenge, no?

Well, you don't have to start from scratch.... the gnustep opensource project is pretty far by now. "Imitation is the highest form of flattery".

It seems like Windows Vista ("formerly" Longhorn) will use a pathbar similar to this "icon path". If I'm not mistaken.
It would be a great addition to DOpus.

EDIT : Just in case, here is a screenshot from Vista (taken from Paul Thurott's overview) that shows its new way of navigating through folders :

DAN_FR, is that Windows? Some type of a skin?

How did you get that launch bar at the bottom? I guess I'm assuming it's OS10?

I'd love an animated launch bar like that in Windows and/or OPUS.

Cheers.

It looks like Windows using a MacOS Visual Style. The modified toolbar (with back / next, views) comes apparently from Nexplorer. Other programs exist to make Explorer look and behave like MacOS (e.g. Styler). Although I guess that only this Nexplorer software can manage the multi-columns view.

"Animated launch tab bar" : do you mean the dock at the bottom of the screen ? I think it's Stardock's ObjectDock.

Go with the flow people, and listen to what the man says. Flyakite.. It's a all-in-one-go kit which transforms most of your Windows into Mac OS X style... Pretty kewl imo..
You MUST check it out if you want a bit of the osx feel on your flaky PC

The NeXTstep file viewer... Yuck! Personally, I hated that and was appalled to see it standardized in OS X. That has to be the most inefficient way of browsing through files ever.
