PDFs open in Directory Opus viewer instead of default Editor

I have been using a good PDF editor, but lately every time I double click a pdf in the Dopus file manager, I get a dialog box saying "not implemented" and the pdf file opens in the Dopus viewer. I have uninstalled and then reinstalled the other PDF Editor with no change. By going to Preferences - Explorer Replacement - Don't replace File Explorer, at least now I can double click PDF file on my desktop but I still get the Dopus Viewer if I double click a PDF in the Dopus file manager.

As in a standalone viewer window, not the preview pane that's on the side of the main lister window?

Do you have any viewer plugins installed that didn't come with Opus?

Or have you changed the PDF file type's double-click or open events/actions?

Opus won't normally try to open PDF files in its own standalone viewer (only in the preview pane), so if that's happening it's probably due to that or similar configuration changes.

the PDFs open in a stand-alone window, and I don't have any viewer plugins that didn't come with Opus. I haven't changed the pdf file type's double-click or open even/actions. If I double click a PDF Icon on the desktop, it opens normally in PDF-X.

Please do this:

  • Settings > File Types
  • Click the menu (icon with three lines) at the top right and choose Diagnostic
  • Enter pdf as the extension and push OK.

It should create a zip file on your desktop with details of the file types / registry settings.

Please send us the zip via reply, private message, or email to crashdumps@gpsoft.com.au

Thanks for sending that.

Nothing in there looks like it's explicitly using the Opus viewer for PDF, which at least rules that out.

A couple of things to try:

  • Right-click a PDF, then use Open With to change the default program to the program you want. That sometimes fixes things opening in the wrong program on double-click.

  • If it still doesn't work, could you take a screenshot of the viewer, including the titlebar and statusbar? That might reveal something.

Hi Leo, I tried to email the requested diagnostic file to the crashdumps email address, but got an error so am trying to upload it here.
Opus_FTD_File_pdf.zip (64.0 KB)

Thank you.

Does the problem still happen with Directory Opus 13.15.3 (Beta) ?

I installed the Beta version and tried several PDFs and all was good, so I rebooted the computer and tried several again - the problem looks to be resolved now - thanks lots!

Thanks for confirming that! At first I didn’t think it was the same problem, but it turned out to affect more things that I thought.

Sorry to report that the same problem has manifest itself again

Did anything change since it was working? E.g. PDF tools installed or updated? (May be hard to tell if they auto-update.)

Have you tried the Open With method to set the default since it broke again?

I'm baffled....it's back to working fine now. I'll call it fixed and keep an eye out for anything that could have changed if it happens again - thanks lots for your help, Leo.

Hi Leo,

I just want to let you know that the issue with pdfs and some graphics being displayed in the Directory Opus viewer still happens every couple of days. What I have found is that rebooting my laptop fixes the issue. I hope that helps.

My guess is that different PDF tools are fighting over the registry settings and changing them on reboot, or when they install updates.

There’s no way Opus would randomly change which application it launches by itself. The file type data in the registry must be changing.
