I know I'm kind of screwed here, but thought I'd ask anyway.
I've been using DOpus for about 20 years now, (used the Amiga version originally) and have never had a computer without it. But I've just started work at a new job where the users are not given admin rights to install software.
I've exhausted every avenue and asked IT to install it for me, even showing them that I have a personal license, but they won't.
Anybody know of a way to use DOpus without having admin rights for a standard install? I'm going crazy not having it.
The portable version (exported from another computer with the normal version installed) will run without admin rights, provided the machine does not block access to USB drives.
(Just to clarify, all versions of Opus will run without admin rights, but you need admin rights to install the normal version while no installation is required to run the portable version on each machine you run it on.)
The USB drive is "sort of" blocked, meaning I can't copy files from my system to a USB stick, but I can copy files from the USB stick to my system.
I can also view images, videos, etc. that are on the stick.
I'll have to do some experimenting to see if programs will run.
I honestly don't know how so many people can work with Windows Explorer on a daily basis. 8)
When you do a USB export there's a checkbox that lets you use the USB stick as a "dongle". That'll allow you to copy the files off the USB stick to someplace else (e.g. local HDD) and run the program from there. It'll run so long as the USB stick is plugged in.
If the USB stick is read-only and you run Opus directly from it then it will work, but any config changes won't be saved. The "dongle" mode will allow you to put everything in another location where saving is possible. It'll also make Opus launch a bit quicker if the USB stick is slower than the HDD.
I tried again using the "dongle" mode, but am not sure if I've done it correctly. I checked the "Use as dongle" box, then exported to the USB stick.
I copied the installation from the USB stick to the PC, and I can run it from the PC. Problem is, it still doesn't seem to let me do certain things.
For instance, I can't create a new toolbar, and I can't save a Lister Layout.
What's odd is that if I make a change to an existing toolbar, like adding a directory as a shortcut, that does get saved.
Any idea why some things would get saved, while others wouldn't?
I've looked at the date stamps on all the files in the directory where DOpus is, and it doesn't look like anything is being updated.
Are you running it from where you copied the files to or from the USB stick? I can't think of a reason it wouldn't be updating the config files if it was being run from the copy on HDD, as long as the copy was made using the same account that is running the program (so the account clearly has permission to modify the files as it was able to copy them there).
