Preview pane does not play video

When I use the preview pane for video file (MKV for instance) I only seem to get a picture preview as opposed to a video preview in the preview pane.

Is this normal or is there something I should turn on to make it work?

I have to admit, I removed Windows Media Player in Windows 10. Is that the problem?

That would break most current methods of playing video in the preview pane, yes.
