Preview pane modifies image files

Directory opus 13, windows 10: If the preview pane is open and I select certain images those files' "modified" time stamp is changed for some reason. (Very confusing when the file list is sorted by "Date modified".)
If I close the preview pane then this doesn't happen. This modification happens only once to a particular file. I don't quite know what makes the affected files special, but so far it only happened for images saved from the internet, hasn't happened to stuff I copied from my DSLR.

What type of file, specifically?

So far I only saw it happen to .jpg, but that's by far the most common image format I have. I did test with a few .png files I transferred from my phone or rendered: they were unaffected, but of course I can't say for certain that being a .png shields the file from the issue.

Seems odd, I can't think of any reason why a JPG would have its modification timestamp changed.

Here are two files, same image, one original, one modified.

Fish_images.zip (154.9 KB)

As I was selecting the files in Firefox's file dialog I noticed that the change also occurs if the file explorer preview shows the image. I guess Dir Opus is off the hook, it's an OS issue.
