Problems using DOpus with Office 365 and 97-2003 documents

I had an electronic failure with my last computer, which used win10 Pro with many Word 97-2003 documents, and purchased a new Dell Inspiron which has win10 home and Office 365. I also purchased DOpus 12.

DOPus works, but not very well. I can open word 97-2003 documents and read them, but cannot make changes or print. I can rename the files and move them (cut and paste or drag).

The main problem is reduced search capabilities. I can search, but capabilities seem to be limited. For example, I can search for a file name and not find it. I can find folder names, if there are not too many sub folders..

Any suggestions, other than purchasing a used computer and installing Office 97-2003? I still have an official 97-2003 installation CD with one unused install. I wonder if it works with UEFI? My old computer used BIOS/MBR.

Editing Word documents is something you do in Microsoft Word. How is Opus involved here? Does the same problem happen if you launch Word via File Explorer instead of Opus?

Please post a screenshot of how you have set up the Tools > Find Files panel (if that's where the problem is) so we can see exactly what you're searching for. Please also post a screenshot showing some of the files/folders you expect it to find that it isn't including in the results.

Images were made using IrfanView. If they are not seen, what should I use?.

I checked a .docx document (which is used by default) and have the same problem. It must be a problem involving Office 2016

The problem occurs when I open the file using DOpus instead of File Explorer. In this example, I went to the file using DOpus. and double-clicked to open it.

I moved the cursor to the end of the word good and click it to select that location. Nothing happened.

I attempted to print and clicked File. All choices except Open, Plugin, Set As Desktop Wallpaper, and Close are greyed out.

I'll need info regarding including images on my post.

Save screenshots as JPG or PNG and drag them to the editor here to add them to your post.

Goofed! Typed Set instead of Save As in the pull-down menu near the end.

Double-clicking Word Documents would not usually open them in the Opus viewer. You must have done something to cause Opus to open them on double-click - did you add the .doc suffix to the Images File Type Group, for example? Or use Open With... to associate them with the Opus viewer?

While Opus can show them if you have the correct preview handlers or ActiveX viewers installed, you would normally want double-clicking a word doc to open it in Word, as the viewer is not a full replacement for Microsoft Word.

That must be the problem. On this computer, there is an Opus icon at the upper left corner of a Word document, while a Word icon appears when using another computer. I assumed Opus added it on the latest upgrade.

I'm a low tech guy when using Opus, just using it to select files, sort, and search, so made no intentional changes. I guess I should check "Images file type". where is it located?

The easiest way to work out what's happening is to send us a diagnostic on the .doc and .docx types.

To do this, go to Settings > File Types in Opus, then select File > Diagnostic from the top left of the window that opens.

Type the extension and click OK, and do that for .doc and .docx. You should then have two zip files on your desktop which you can attach here.

Opus_FTD_File_doc.zip (38.2 KB)

Opus_FTD_File_docx.zip (37.7 KB)

You don't need to worry about the Images file type group or anything within the Opus file types editor.

It looks to me like the .doc and .docx registry entries are largely missing or pointing at the wrong things.

I would try doing a repair on your Office installation. You can usually do this by going to Start > Settings > Apps, selecting Microsoft Office and clicking Modify, then following the wizard.

Unfortunately, It did not help. The repair took only a second or so (rotating circle seen), but assume it actually happened. I restarted the computer after the repair. Diagnostics after the repair follow:

Opus_FTD_File_doc.zip (38.2 KB)

Opus_FTD_File_docx.zip (37.7 KB)

Those are identical (at least for the .doc case) so the repair didn't do anything at all to the file types, unfortunately.

You might be able to repair things by right-clicking a .doc file, Open With -> Choose Default Program, then selecting "Always use this program to open .doc files" and choosing Word.

(And the same for .docx.)

If that doesn't help, I would try doing a full uninstall of Office followed by a reinstall.

Out of interest, do you know if you installed Office via the normal downloaded installer, or was it installed via the Microsoft Store?

Leo, it worked!. I didn't see that choice at first, but after tinkering around, it was there. I had to choose Word from the Microsoft store, and now it seems to work fine. The sort issue seems to have disappeared, too. I'll tackle Excel tomorrow

This is a relatively new computer, purchased a few months ago. It came with a trial version of Windows. I could have purchased Office home and student or another choice from an local electronics store, but waited a day too long and I was billed for Office 365. They were open about it, warning me that the trial period was ending, but we were not together on what the actual end day was. Jim
