Quicktime player does mp4 files

Hi

I have MP4 files playing in WMP, but in opus there is no thumbnail and quicktime loads into the viewer pane.

I have MP4 added to the list of file types associated with the opus viewer plugin. I tried removing mp4 from the active x list, but just got the hex in the viewer pane.

See this FAQ:

Sorry, re-reading your post it sounds like you've already looked at the FAQ.

Are you using 64-bit Windows? If so, you need to check with the 64-bit version of Media Player. If only the 32-bit version can play .mov files, you probably just need to install the 64-bit versions of the codecs (e.g. FFDShow).

It is 32bit windows.

So I download and install 64bit codecs for ffdshow and it does not upset my 32bit system.

I posted as it seemed a bit odd, like quicktime was highjacking the player for mp4 files.

64-bit stuff won't work on a 32-bit Windows install so don't install that.

When you say Quicktime is hijacking mp4 files, do you mean while you double-click them or when you select them with the Opus viewer panel open?

Just the opus viewer pane loads quicktime movie player. Strangely I get thumbnails for quicktime .mov files and opus plays it in the viewer pane in normal way. Just mp4 files won't behave.

Double clicking a mp4 file will make it open in VLC media player, which I have associated all video file types to, rather than WMP.

Try this:

[ul][li]Windows XP: Load Windows Media Player, right-click its titlebar and select Tools -> Options; then, on the File Types tab associate Media Player with Movie file (mpeg4) (or whatever the type is called).

[/li]
[li]Windows Vista/7: Go to Control Panel -> Programs -> Default Programs and assign the MP4 type to Windows Media Player there.[/li][/ul]

After doing that, do you still see QuickTime being used in the Opus viewer?

You should be able to re-instate VLC as the double-click handler using the Open With menu (right-click one of the files) and doing it that way should leave the fixed registry settings.

(VLC has been known to break a bunch of video-playback registry settings if you let it take over filetypes in its installer. It's quite frustrating. Bascially, rather than just take over the bits it can handle its installer replaces the entire filetypes, including the things VLC doesn't handle. Or it did the last time I accidentally let it. VLC is great but I'm careful not to allow it to take over filetypes when I install it now.)

That didn't work (mp4 not listed in wmp) but you made me think so I renamed them as wmv files and now they play in opus and have thumbnails.

What's that all about then!

It's about VLC (or something else) messing up the MP4 filetype (but not the WMV one apparently).

Try using the Open With menu to assign MP4 to Windows Media Player; that might work as well. (Afterwards, you should be able to assign it back to VLC using Open With again.)

Which version of Windows are you using?

Did as suggested. MP4 then opens in WMP on double click, but still loads quicktime into viewer pane and no thumbnail.

Am on WinXP. I have a vague memory of service pack 3. Not sure how to check if it's necessary.

If you're on XP you can tell QuickTime not to handle MP4 files via QuickTime's MIME settings window, though I don't know if changing that will re-instate the required WMP registry settings.

Changing MIME settings stops quicktime appearing in viewer pane.

Still no thumbnail for MP4 files and the viewer pane has the code in it. I have registered MP4 filter and MP4's play in WMP.

Only thing I can think of is to try this .reg file, although if WMP is playing the files I'm not sure it will make a difference. Shouldn't hurt, though, as the settings should be as they are in the file.

Hi Leo

I have returned to this project after a few weeks, and this solves it. Nice one.

Thanks for your help.
