Not sure when the issue started occuring, maybe after an updated DO version, but when extracting a file (4.5 gig in size) through DO it takes approximately 6.5 minutes... but when done directly through winrar only takes 1.05 minutes.
The extraction is the same file and location, using unrar.dll .....
So if anyone has suggestions to why speed is so slow and why DO takes 6 times longer to preform the same task i would be grateful.
I am using
Directory opus Version 12.24
WinRAR version 6.01
Running Windows 10 Pro 20H2
Intel 4770K CPU
16 GIG RAM
Samsung evo SSD
You could try replacing the unrar64.dll in C:\Program Files\GPSoftware\Directory Opus\VFSPlugins with the WinRAR 6.01 version to see if that makes it the same speed. (This has not been tested as compatible by us, but it's usually fine, and you can always put the old DLL back if it doesn't work.)
Check the RAR settings under Preferences / Zip & Other Archives / Archive and VFS Plugins to make sure it's unrar.dll that's being used as well. 7z.dll is the other option for unpacking rar files.
Beyond that, if there's a large difference in extraction of archive data, when both programs are using the same unrar.dll, then I'd suspect antivirus may be treating the two programs differently. (Assuming you're extracting the same archives from and to the same places, and have done the tests multiple times to rule out caching.)
If the archives have lots of small files then it could also come down to whether or not both programs are setting the same attributes / timestamps on the files, which becomes significant with a large number of small files.
First of all thank you so much Leo for the very speedy reply... greatly appreciated
So i tried as you have suggested using the winrar.dll but it didnt seem to make a difference, but i think after further testing , the issue is more the transfer of the extracting file from sata to a usb3.1 drive. The logic being i extracted the archive from the destination drive instead and it was comparable to the same speed as doing it with the winrar program with DO doing it 5-10 seconds faster.
Extracting the archive to various other sata drives resulted in similar speeds between DO and Winrar, copying the archive over to USB drive via Directory Opus is around 100-150MB/sec but extracting the archive it is only around 10MB/sec from sata to usb3.1 via Directory Opus
Does that help as to what the bottleneck problem maybe ?
I also disabled the antivirus while performing these tests
I really love the ease to create a queue to extract multiple archives and would hate to lose that ability with DO
USB3.1
USB Drive is a WD BLACK D10 12 TB with an average transfer speed of 200-250MB/SEC
Did you test extracting the archive direct to the USB drive using WinRAR?
Possibly the USB drive is very slow with certain buffer sizes, or some other similar issue (some USB devices have bizarre bottlenecks/behaviors and are often only speed tested with a couple of programs), so you could try messing around with those, but it'd probably be easier to extract the archive to a normal drive and then copy/move the result to the USB drive, if extracting direct to the USB drive is what's causing the problem.
Such a dramatic speed decrease, and on a USB drive, does make me think it's still more likely to be antivirus or something (they can be difficult to fully disable at times). Or it could also happen if you have Opus (or something else) looking at the destination USB stick while things are written, which might be causing the data to be read back at the same time, which may cause the USB device to be very slow if it isn't good at reading and writing at the same time.
