Rename doesn't work - DO 9.5.5

Just had an occasion to rename some folders. So I hit F2 and I'm having a problem. When I hit the F2 button, I get a brief flicker showing the rename dialog box but then it disappears and I can't rename my folders. Just to be sure I'm having this problem...I tried selecting other folders in lister mode and tried the same thing. I hit the F2 button and nada. I can't rename any folders.

Windows XP Service Pack 2, 512 mg of RAM, and never had this problem before.

F2 doesn't open the rename dialog box in the first place, at least not by default. (It enters inline-rename mode.)

What is your F2 hotkey set to run?

Any chance that you have set F2 to do something else?

It says here "Inline Rename".

Alright...so I tried the other way...which is File menu...Rename. It doesn't work. Period.

I found a workaround though:

Turns out I had made myself a button that performs this job:

Rename PRESET="Title Case"

The "other" way is just another configurable button so it's possible you changed it too. As others have said, what is the actual command set for either F2 or the File / Rename button ?

OMG, Rename is totally broken, and no one else has noticed. Where would we be without you, DorothyFan1???

Well...you could give me a discount on the next release of Directory Opus?

Or make me a private beta tester. Like...pre Illuminati mode.

Can we get the fix for this as soon as possible?

I can't decide whether to laugh or cry...

To clarify, rename isn't broken. If it was we would have all found out a long time ago.

From your description, you've clearly done something to your configuration which has stopped things working.

You still haven't answered the question from the first reply. The same question was then repeated in the second and third replies from other people and still not answered.

It's a waste of our time trying to help you if you are not going to read and answer people's questions. (This is far from the first time. It's very frustrating.)

This will. teach Jon to resist the use of irony when confronting the ironically challenged.

I apologise if I was not clear enough in the instructions I gave you for finding a possible cause of your problem, a somehow altered Hotkey.

Perhaps you could try them just one more time and see if you can work out where I led you astray.

It looks like this here:

I'm pretty sure that this is the default set. My own changes come lower down in the list.

Adding to what Michael just posted, you need to double-click the F2 line shown in his screenshot to open the hotkey and see the actual command it runs, like this:

The main list only shows the "name", not the "function" part. The function part is what's important.

Frustrating? I don't think I'm trying to be obtuse. I honestly posted what I thought to be a problem. And there is a problem. I have not changed any of my settings on my computer. Now, I have tested Directory Opus again this morning. It appears to be working...after I rebooted my computer. I have no explanation why inline rename would fail to work when the computer hasn't been shut off for an extended period of time. Please let me apologize for not revealing that fact when I first posted about the issue.

I've checked my configuration settings and yep...they're vanilla just as I first installed it when I got my license. In my humble estimation...something is wrong. I don't know if it's Directory Opus or my computer. Granted...I've been experiencing issues with my computer giving me random error messages saying it can't save files to the hard drive and needs rebooting. This in my opinion is a serious indication my computer is about to die. I'm aware of this fact and I'm hopeful about getting a new computer to replace it with. Until then...i thought it might be helpful to explain the issue I had and see if there was a valid way of figuring out what the problem is.

Currently the issue has been "resulved"...but this still doesn't explain why not shutting down the computer for extended periods of time should affect inline rename or F2 and only after rebooting does it fix the "problem".

You still haven't answered the question and told us what your F2 key is set to run.

I give up.

The F2 key is set to run inline rename mode. Period. No changes.

What actual command is F2 set to run? Not a summary of what you think it does; tell us the actual command next to the word "function" when you edit the hotkey.

Do you have a keyboard with F-lock key that may have been sending a completely different command when you thought you were pushing F2?

The function when I edit the command says "rename inline"

Thread closed before anyone else wastes time on it.
