Scrolling through files with find-as-you-type?

I have tried serching for a way to change the behaviour of the find-as-you-type functionality, but I have been unable to do so.

Currently,if I press 't' three times in a row, Directory Opus 10 will look for a file/folder that starts with 'ttt'. Basically I would like to get the same functionality as Windows Explorer where pressing 't' three times will highlight the third file/folder that starts with 't'.

Is this possible?

Many thanks in advance.

Toggle Preferences / Miscellaneous / Advanced: fayt_firstchar_repeat

Awesome, thanks.

I did have a look through that list, but nothing jumped out as being the solution to my crisis.

You know, that in the default configuration you can press tab in the FAYT field to iterate over the matching files!?

I did not know that. Thanks for the tip.

You can use F3 as well.

I didn't know that. Very useful.

By the way, I liked more the way inline find worked in previous version (as far as I can remember there's new find as you type popup bar since version 10). I mean if I type "t" it selected first file starting with "t" and I could hit left or right arrow key to jump to next file immediately.
I set find as you type close timeout to 1 sec but it has two disadvantages:

  • I still have to wait 1 sec before using arrow keys (after typing letters to find inline)
  • if I use "?" or ">" to enter command mode, I have only 1 second to think about the command name and start typing it. I know that it doesn't disappear once I put at least one character in that popup field but it takes 2 - 3 seconds to me to think what I'm going to type.

Any solutions?

Hit Esc to close the field. (Note that it only affects left/right, and thus isn't an issue in Details mode.)

Do you literally only get 1 second? I get 5 seconds here before it closes. Either way, you could push ? or > after thinking instead of before. (Once you type at least one letter after the ? or > the field will remain open, too. So just don't push ? or > until you've thought of the command you want to run and it shouldn't be an issue.)

Yeah, I know, it's just habits, but I can't get used to the new behavior.

One more think I don't like in the new quick find bar. I use list view and when there's no horizontal scroll bar, the find bar covers one file name. See screenshot.
I can see that if I use arrows to select the covered file the bar is shown at the top, but it's one more thing that makes the new quick find less convenient.
I like the way it works in Explorer. It finds the file by letters I type but no bar is displayed.
Unfortunately disabling "require activation key for find mode" disables quick find completely. Maybe another option to search without displaying any bar?

If it didn't cover a file in List mode, and instead resized the list vertically, the list of files would jump about all over the place. (Note that it will move to the top if a file at the bottom has focus.)

We won't be investing much time in changes that would only benefit List mode unless there is a major problem that needs solving.
