I experience two problems when searching my windows harddrive on an entire drive like 'D':
PROBLEM # 1
it is wonderful searching on first piece of words in filename.
but, if i use the entire filename (with or wo the extension) it cannot find it.
example:
i want to find the file: Sun Over FE - Gravity Is Garbage.mp4
it will find 'gravity' or 'sun' or 'garbage', etc., and give me a nice pick list list that i can refine.
but, it cannot find 'Sun Over FE - Gravity Is Garbage'.
also, it cannot find 'Sun Over FE - Gravity Is Garbage.mp4'
otherwise, it is a wonderfully designed search logic.
PROBLEM # 2
it would be nice to see a spinning icon, so, i can know when it's done searching.
i can never be quite sure when it's done.
Are we talking about Tools > Find Files, or the Windows Search field, or something else?
Which version of Opus? (Your account says Opus 11, but I'm not sure if that's still correct.)
i am on windows 8.1 pro.
In response to how i execute search:
it is a text box in the top right, just to the right of my icons for 'view', 'folder', and 'lister'.
sometimes i use cntrl/f to execute a more sophisticated tool.
In response to version:
i think version 11.
not sure, as there is no 'about' menu option, and other menu items don't seem to allow me to show my version.
so, i will look on my C drive now...
my gpssoftware folder doesn't give me a clue, so, i will now try other searches.
i did find a clue, so, my snagit application must be aware somehow:
i found the following file dopus.exe.Directory Opus.GP Software.11.19.0.0.ico in this folder: Techsmith Snaglt\dataStore\Applcons, showing latest update of 3/3/2023.
but, i get regular auto updates, so i know opus is being updated with new version every few weeks.
suggestion for that search box logic:
it seems that the logic to see if a search string is 'contained in' the filename, doesn't work for the entire file name.
so, if the programming language doesn't do that, then:
install an initial filename match, like 'equal to', etc., before starting the main search logic.
it looks like i'm running an old version.
i think i will just upgrade to opus 12, then, try everything again!
The top-right search field in Opus 11 and 12 just passes the query string to Windows Search. It's up to that what happens afterwards. Syntax is the same as in File Explorer.
Tools > Find Files is Opus's own search, and much easier to use (but takes up more screen space).
In Opus 13, the top-right search field can be used to search in various different ways, including the old Windows Search mode and new modes that use Opus's built-in Find Files (without having to display the full UI), and Everything's indexed search.
Help > About Directory Opus is where to find the About dialog, if you're using the default toolbars.
thanks! now i understand.
