I have a strange thing that happens in Opus 10. It's related to selecting multiple files in a given folder.
I display a listing on screen of all the files in the desired folder. And in that list there are a number of files that I want to delete (or move, or copy). So I click on the first file to be deleted, and then holding down the CTRL key, I click successively on additional files. Then I release the CTRL key, and hit the delete key on my keyboard.
But in many cases, while I am selecting files, suddenly all the files I have selected have copies added into the file listing, with "(copy 1)" added into the file name. And, when I restart the selection process, now including the "(copy 1)" newly added files. Once I have selected about 5-10 files, I can suddenly see (Copy 2) and (Copy 3) files now also added to the list.
If I limit the selction to just a few files, the extra copies generally do not appear.
Of course, the CTRL key is used when one wants to copy a file, as opposed to the shift key to move a file. But I don't understand why Opus is doing this strange adding of copies.
If you select something, then hold Ctrl and drag it slightly, then let go, it will copy that file into the current folder (or whatever you drag on to, but that's probably the current folder if you didn't drag far).
I suspect you are triggering that by accident. i.e. You're moving the mouse before letting go of the button.
I fett it had to be something of that ilk, and I was not aware of that action in Windows. I just went into Windows Explorer, and did confirm that's why it happens. It does get difficult when one is selecting a large number of files, to avoid that slight movement.
It would be nice if MS modified that activity and required greater movement, say a full line item's worth of movement to copy to the same folder.
In DOpus you can use the middle mouse button for selecting files. If you then accidentally move the mouse nothing will happen (normally, If you do not have assigned a action to middle-mouse drag )
You can also turn on "Check-Box Mode" (Mines under View -> Check-Box Mode but I don't think that's the default location). Then Edit -> Select Other -> Checkboxes to Selection... when you are ready to do something with those files (Again, I don't think that's the default location).
Check-Box mode is great for selecting multiple files while still being able to click other places on the screen/lister/window or view a file and not lose what you previously selected. Even if you go into a folder and back, the selection is still there (this might be an option that makes that work).
Just another way of handling files if you are having troubles with accidentally doing a small click-and-drag while selecting lots of files
I was not familiar with Checkbox mode. And it is under the "View" menu on my machine. But going into HELP just brought up a message that the help file was not completed in time for my download of Ver 10.
I'm using a Logitech M310 cordless mouse. It has a center scroll wheel, which can be used (as a button) to select items. But once one uses the CTRL to select addditional items, the same small movement copies the file. But, in playing around, I learned something interesting, which does not work in Windows Explorer, but does work in Opus 10.
The scroll wheel on the M310 mouse can act as a button. And if one selects files using it, there is no need to use the CTRL key for multiple selections. Just click the scroll wheel on each of the files involved. And nothing gets moved or duplicated accidentally. And, it acts as a toggle to select/deselect. When all the selections have been made, use the left button and drag to move the files to the desired folder.
I have tried other combinations to do a copy, but have not yet found one to do that. This may well be checkbox in action, as once the files are selected, they do not lose their selection by clicking elsewhere around the screen.
I just now checked for updates, and I see that a newer version is now available - I don't think it was last week. I will download it and install it, and I think that the HELP files will probably be completed now, and also the manual, which I like to print out in duplex, and GBC bind - and then of course read the whole thing.
OK, I've downloaded the latest Opus, and installed it.
I went into help, (and also the manual), and searched for "checkbox". I found it on page 122 of the manual. So I now understand what it is. But for the life of me, I can't find it in Opus. I opened Tools>Folder Options, and I've searched that window, and all the sub windows and tabs, but cannot locate anything related to "checkbox". So obviously I'm in the wrong place somehow. Please give me the path to locate "checkbox". Once I find it, I assume I can add that command to a toolbar. I thought I followed the HELP instructions to get there, but apparently not.
Also, I won't be printing out the complete user's manual - it's a massive 713 pages - that sure was a lot of work for someone. I'll just keep it as a PDF, and regularly browse through it.
I don't think it's an error in the manual; you've chosen to use old and/or custom toolbars which will be different to the new Opus 10 defaults that the manual describes. (There isn't a View menu at all in the new default toolbars.)
You can add a picture via the User Control Panel link at the top-left of the page.
