I often have to browse through lots of images - most often I'm in the list view and switch to the standalone viewer by either doubleclicking on file or pressing Enter.
Can I somehow set it up in such a way that after I decide on the right picture and press Esc (or something), the file automatically gets selected in the lister?
Push Ctrl-T before closing the viewer to tag the current file. It will put the file display that launched the viewer into Checkbox Mode with the file(s) you tagged checked.
Just tried it, it's not what I was looking for but better than nothing. If this can be implemented (maybe as an option) in a future build I'd be eternally grateful.

Did you try just pushing the "insert" key to select the images? This will also turn on the checkbox mode in the background for those files, while you can go on selecting or deselecting images.
"Insert" is the same as Ctrl+T, from what I can see? So it's still not as useful as having the file selected upon exiting the viewer. Admittedly "Insert" is a bit more elegant than Ctrl+T if for nothing else than because it's on one key
Also my workflow doesn't really need any tags for now (never used them either), I just need one file selected so I can both have this file in the preview pane and automatically drag&drop it somewhere or open it.
You can drag & drop directly from the viewer to other programs to open the file you're currently viewing. Drag the window's icon (top-left of the titlebar) to do that.
Nice, I didn't know that - that helps as far as dragging the file part goes, but it would really be better if the file were actually selected after exiting the viewer (and also this results in a viewer window in the background that later has to be closed).
Yeah, sorry, i´ve noticed that later, that it´s basically the same. But i don´t understand the problem, all checkboxed files will remain selected after closing the viewer, so you can do your operations on them. Did i get you wrong somehow?
This particular way of going through pictures is very useful for when you're say working with textures and from time to time you just need to pick one of them and not worry too much about it for the next 15 minutes till you need another one - that's how ACDSee works for example, after you close the fullscreen / standalone viewer and switching back it jumps to the last file you previewed.
A niggle with the tags is also a kind of ... friction with thumbnails mode, after switching back and forth sometimes it is very hard to remember which picture was selected (chances are the whole directory will be full of very similar names - door001, door 002 etc) + DOpus remembers which files are tagged (which is desired in normal circumstances) so you have to untag them after every review. And it'd also be nice to have the preview pane follow too, in case the thumbnails mode is not the one currently in use - this way I could see at a glance what the last file looks like.
It's really hard to describe without showing it on screen I'm afraid. My clumsy description probably makes it sound like something perfectly doable...
I guess the best thing to do is to make a video that shows what exactly is going on?

No, that´s not necessary, i think. Did you file a feature request? Of course ACDSee is a dedicated program, but on the other hand Opus has already very convenient viewer functionality compared to other file managers. Surely it would be a good idea to make untagging all checkboxes a bit easier.
In the end, I found a very simple solution, in fact so simple that I didn't think it'll be useful
I just set up a few very simple "on alt-doubleclick" and "ctrl-doubleclick" actions that send the image files to various Photoshops or other software I'm using - works like a charm! Doesn't change the viewmode, keeps the file I last viewed without an extra window etc. Problem solved!
