File or folder properties, the change read only does not stick.
Is there an option to do this without using raw commands, which I really don't understand how to do. XPpro
I am trying to copy something into the read only folder and cannot do it.
Indeed, the property bits set from the Windows Explorer properties dialog launched from an Opus lister do not stick on my machine either. You might want to report it.
Try the Set Attributes menu item from the File => File Commands menu instead. It gives you a much deeper level of functionality than Explorer and looks like this:
The Properties dialog can modify attributes okay here.
If you try changing the same attributes on the same files/folders using Explorer do you also see the same problem? The Properties dialog is part of Windows/Explorer and not something Opus has much control over so I would expect you to see the same behaviour in Opus and Explorer.
If it doesn't work in both Opus and Explorer, perhaps it's due to not having permissions to modify the attributes on the files/folders in question.
Funnily enough, changing the Hidden attribute works fine in the Properties dialog, but the Read-only attribute resists any change, no matter if I choose to apply it to the selected folder only or to the selected folder and all subfolders (I only tested this for folders).
This applies to Explorer and Opus as well, it makes no difference where the Properties dialog is invoked from (quite logically).
One other thing: the initial Read-only checkbox in the dialog is always in indeterminate mode, even if the folder is empty and there is no reason for Explorer not to know the current status of the bit.
All in all, this might well be another XP SP2 bug (just like the "famous and eternal" bug that causes nothing to happen when right-clicking on any network connection in Network Connections and selecting Status).

The indeterminate state of the read only checkbox is a long-standing xp bug.
I haven't totally read this thread, but this: support.microsoft.com/kb/326549/ may help.
It is a XP bug. Did a lot of reading. There is always a command prompt way.
Now I know where DO hids the method.
Thanks
The file/ set attributes does not open that box. Still must be missing something. I am running as administrator
What does it do instead?
From reading the Microsoft article Anakha posted, it looks like it is by-design rather than a bug. If you read the Cause section of the article, it sounds like it's a bad idea to set the read-only flag on folders (except when Explorer sets the flag for its own reasons as a side-effect of other actions). Of course, it something else has set the flag, and there's no Desktop.ini for the folder, then it can be useful to clear it for the reasons the article mentions.
I was trying to change a folder and not a file so all is ok
Changing it on folders is what can be bad. Changing it on files is fine.
What does the Set Attributes command do for you instead of opening the window in Alan's post?
I was trying set/attrib on a folder and not a file. On a file works ok.
I just tried the MS way from a command prompt and get an error.
I had read somewhere that taking ownership of a folder may work.
I am just playing around because a program I installed would not let me copy a file to the installation folder. I took full control of the folder and it still stopped me.This is the first time I have run into this XP thing

I'm having similar problem with Vista Home Premium. I'm trying to use a program which of course lives in C:\Program Files dir, and the user scripts and libraries etc. dirs live in this program's subdir there as well. I am unable to add things, as these dirs are marked read-only, and going properties to uncheck the read-only box acts like it does something but my command is actually ignored and everything is still read-only. I've alsi tried the file->file copmmands->set attributes menu item as mentioned here, but that is also ignored. I do get a dialog saying that I must have admin privelages to do that, then I get the Vista admin permissions "Yes I really did want to do that" verification, and a progressbar sort of thing goes by, but in the end absolutely nothing has changed.
I've also tried going up and making Program Files writable and work my way back down, but again, absolutely nothing that it tells me its doing is actually happening, and everything is still read-only in the end.
Please help me get control of my machine back!
My problem only happened once, so I just went about my merry way and forgot about it. Never did find a good answer, except that all folders are marked read only and does not mean anything.. I run XP Pro.
I think your best option is to find a Vista forum. Try Googleing "vista forum". There are some really great forums around. This is not a Dopus problem, but something in the basic OS
It's possible those folders are permissioned in a way which doesn't allow your account (even with admin rights enabled via UAC) to change their attributes.
You can see if this is the case by opening the Properties dialog for one of the problem folders, clicking on the Security tab, then the Advanced button, and then on the Effective Permissions tab.
Then click Select and type in your account name, and see if "Write attributes" is ticked.
