Set the Archive attribute to "yes/checked" whenever I copy/duplicate/move files

Hello and Happy New Year! :fireworks: :clinking_glasses:

I'm a new Directory Opus user and so far I'm amazed by all the features. I can't even imagine having to use the Windows File Explorer again, haha. :slightly_smiling_face:

I have a problem that's probably simple to solve, but I couldn't do so myself even after reading the help file and searching the forum threads.

I want files to have their Archive attribute changed to "yes/checked" whenever I copy/duplicate them. Windows File Explorer does this by default, but DOpus doesn't (at least for me). So how can I make DOpus set the Archive attribute to "yes/checked" when I copy/duplicate/move files?

I'm using Directory Opus 12.33 Pro

Thanks in advance!

Happy new year.

These options should let you control that.

From Archive bit - Wikipedia :

when a file is created or modified, the archive bit is set (i.e. turned on), and when the file has been backed up, the archive bit is cleared (i.e. turned off)

Thanks. I had already tried these options in all 4 combinations, but when I go to file properties > Advanced... > "File is ready for archiving" is still not enabled. :face_with_diagonal_mouth:

It should be cleared after copying, not ticked.

"Ready for archiving" means the file has been modified (or is a new file) and it has NOT yet been backed up. Once it has been backed up (e.g. by copying it), the flag is cleared (if the software that made the copy chooses to do that; not all tools will).

If anything then modifies the file again, Windows itself will automatically set the flag again to mark it as changed and requiring a new backup.

The flag is really poorly named in Windows and some other OS! It really means "not yet archived", rather than "archived".

Good to know! Can I make DOpus tick/enable this flag whenever I copy/move/duplicate a file though? DOpus is very powerful, so I know it should be possible.

Set it on the source side or the destination side?

Destination side. But it wouldn't hurt to know how to do it for the source as well.

If Preserve the attributes of copied files (Opus 12) or Copy file attributes (Opus 13) is turned off, the destination file will pick up the A attribute by nature of being a new file, but will also lose any other attributes the original file had.

There isn't a way to set the A attribute on the source file. That wouldn't really make sense, as it would be saying "this file needs to be backed up" when the file hasn't been modified since the last time it was backed up, and was just copied.

Got it! I thought there would be a way to enable only the Archive attribute while keeping all other attributes unchanged, but disabling "Preserve the attributes of copied files" should work for now. :+1:
