Check there isn't a space at the start or end of the username or password, or what you're pasting into the two field. Some programs may trim either or both of the fields and others may not, which could result in a hard to spot difference.
If the username or password have non-ascii characters then that might also be worth considering, in case there is an encoding issue somewhere (although I'm not aware of any issues there).
