I noticed this issue since 2017 and many other posts about similar thing. There is no good solution yet that can close the gap until today. I hope what Leo mentioned to use CopyFileEx method in future release can happen in DOpus 13.
I chose to live with slow transfer speed with DOpus for years, until recently when i get a new NAS and having slow transfer speed again, i decided to carry out the speed test.
I did a fresh Win11 23h2 installation on empty ssd. No other software installed, only DOPus. Copy buffer 2MB and copy non buffer 1MB. A single 148GB file transfer is used in all tests.
Below is the speed test for my old Synology DS3611xs NAS. In average, DOPus is doing 523MB/s upload and 583MB/s download.
Windows File Explorer below is again faster with about 550MB/s upload and 1000MB/s download. The higher write speed at initial stage (800MB/s) cannot sustain because of the cheap dram-less ssd i used in the NAS. However, this burst speed did not happen with DOpus, it was constant at ~370 from the start. Time difference is bigger with this NAS write.
TeraCopy Pro demonstrated similar read/write result as DOPus (default 1MB buffer size) regardless it is used within DOPus or thru File Explorer. I attached only Asustor result here.
Since TeraCopy is also unable to help in this situation, is there anything else that can be done for the time being until the next release with CopyFileEx?
the speed of synology devices is higher with the do 13 than with the do12.
However, the current DSM version is required: 7.2.1-69057 Update 3
29 dsm versions difference to your current one
they have changed the protocol several times since 7.x
check
Yes my Synology NAS is too old and not supported by DSM7. The use of conventional hdd is also frequent, i need to replace average 2 disks/yr, and that is seagate nas hdd. So i am moving away from hdd based nas, but i overlooked how terrible dram-less nvme performed... totally not suitable for large file sequential write.
Just installed OPus 13 beta, and yeah the network transfer speed is now similar to windows explorer. Finally something hang on for so long has a solution.
Opus 13 did solve this network transfer speed problem and tested in the fresh windows 11 installation copy. However on earlier windows 11 with Opus 13 (same laptop, just different windows SSD), the transfer speed will not reach the same level of fresh windows copy (even using file explorer). It can only achieve 85-90% speed of fresh windows. network Speed test was done on 2nd, 3rd, 4th & 5th ssd inside the laptop and not the windows ssd. The laptop can house 5 ssd.
This is not Opus problem, but windows or installed apps. Any idea what kind of app or tools that 'may' impact the network performance? no antivirus installed, not changing firewall settings.
I may slowly reinstall app on fresh ssd windows 11 and later image it over old ssd. However i worry it may end up with same performance problem later if i reinstall the same programs. Any advice on what type of app to be avoided is appreciated.
Just run the file download and upload from laptop to NAS to ssd 2,3,4, not touching windows ssd1. Using fresh windows 11 23h2, the speed is ~15% higher than on old windows11 23h2. Fresh windows 11 copy from nas is solid 1GB/s, but old windows 11 fluctuating between 750-930 MB/s. I cannot figure out why, there is no disk activity on ssd shown in task manager before transferring.
Using Opus & file explorer is showing the same result.
Exactly same OS version. Seems like over time when more & more programs are installed, somehow something is affecting the network performance as well as ssd performance. I can't trace what it is, disable and shutdown programs in task mgr doesn't help.
One possible way to trace is to use the fresh windows to install the program 1 by 1 and run the speed test after each program is installed. If still cannot trace, then it could be the windows OS itself that turns out to be clumsy after some times use then nothing much can be done.
I might have found the culprit that is responsible for the slower network performance. Unbelievable, it is a famous download manager by the name of "Internet Download Manager".
With exactly same file copy from NAS to laptop ssd2, nothing download from internet. I install my favourite programs, then restart laptop and run the test after every program installation. Office 365, Adobe Suit etc doesn't have impact on the network transfer speed. Until after IDM was installed, network transfer speed immediately dropped by 15-20% as below and stuck at ~850 MB/s.
I have tried a few times tests with & without IDM running, and the results obviously showed the difference. I can't imagine in what way a download manager can affect network transfer speed.
When IDM is running and file transfer is going on, shut down IDM during transfer will not restore the speed. Stop the transfer and rerun again only the speed will restore.
I may need to restart the PC to try again to confirm this. The test is done on fresh Windows, i will use old windows ssd to try also.
