Substitute editor for Wordpad, that is actually usable?

Yet another editor i could check, thanks.

Have you tried Opus' view pane?

Yes, occasionally, but only for reading stuff. I need to also write RTFs. Anyway, i now have different text editors at hand, thanks to the forum here. :+1:

I miss win7 everyday! Will have to try lifting the task manger out of my install old install.

You could also check, if Sysinternal's Process Explorer suits your needs. It has an option to replace the default task manager, which, for instance, has no "restart application" feature.

I have it. And i use https://system-informer.com most of the time, it's a good one.

I'm just nostalgic for good old win7.

Ok, i see...

:slightly_smiling_face:

Just in case it is still relevant:
As @lxp said, WordPad is not shipped anymore with Windows, but you can still use it if you get files from older Windows or just via a 3rd party installer like Windows WordPad.
@abr, if WordPad works for your needs, you don't have to switch to another app.

Yes, normal Wordpad is my light weight text editor, which i use most of the time. For more advanced use cases, i have now a few extra editor programs. And Atlantis looks good, in case i want to write a book. :slightly_smiling_face:

Are you talking about Win 11? On 10 I still have Wordpad. Don't know why you won't use MS Word; the load time for me is like half a second.

Obsidian has an add-in that you can import .txt files. The problem is you can't remove the line numbers when using text files for some reason so I don't use it. Apparently with .rtf you have to use a terminal-style add-in to convert them. Ya no thanks. These are the kinds of things that make me stick with mainstream apps.

Seems like i don't even have Word installed here (Windows 11). But for my minimalistic text editor needs, my current choices are fine, just using Wordpad, and in case i need some more sophisticated program, one of the other programs.

True. I just settled for Notepad++ for basic text, because on Windows 10 they never did implement proper dark modes. Doesn't matter now, Win 10 is on the way out.

I might go back to Obsidian for .txt .rtf and .md files. Or just stick with MS Word, dunno yet.
I made a sweet Word setup and notes template to make Word docs look like basic notes.

Windows 10 Enterprise LTSC 2021 will be supported until 2032.

You might have just given me the solution I need. Thanks a bunch.
...

No problem.
By the way, the Recall feature can be physically removed from your PC (Turn Windows features on or off dialog). The Recall itself is fully local, by the way, AI works on your machine, and everything is stored on your machine. It is the equivalent of running a local LLM to analyze screenshots of your screen.
It is actually a neat idea. I'm sure that if Microsoft didn't do it, someone else would do it and charge money for it.
Microsoft gets a lot of hate, some of it is deserved, but this Recall stuff is just very easy to demonize for bad journalists.

Actually don't think I will use Enterprise LTSC. It's for big business and I'm a personal user.
The pic is an example of why I would not want to upgrade past Win 10.

The name is confusing. It is the same Windows 10 as any other. You can buy the licence for about 20 dollars.

Valid point. You can keep Windows 10. I think all SW and new desktop HW will support it until 2032. I'm not sure about new laptops, though.
Windows 11 has IOT and LTSC releases too, which don't include any new features and only get security updates. That is the whole purpose because one of the use cases involves installing them on an industrial HW that must not have any fancy new features.

Thus, there are a lot of options. Hope you will find what works for you.

Thanks very much !
I have always wanted to keep Titans Chess from Vista and Windows 7.
Thanks for the link. I didn't know we could still get it.

Titans Chess? Nah, Archon Ultra, Critics Choice!

I've never been very good at playing chess.
