Substitute editor for Wordpad, that is actually usable?

Microsoft is well known for epic stupid changes. As it came with 24H2, where they removed Wordpad for no apparent reason. A very bad choice. In my case, i just want to be able to open and read RTF files without having to see that strange \rtf1 \par {xyz\par trash, that is displayed along the part, that i actually want to read. And having said that, almost all substitute editors mess up the german diacritics, to make the text even more unreadable. (See my screenshot).

Very frustrating. I tried Notepad++, Editpad Lite and some others, but they all have the same issue. Only LibreOffice is a bit better in that regard, but takes ridiculously long to open even tiny text files, so i'm looking for a better option. Does anybody here in the forum, by any chance, know a better (and free) alternative? Or how to get rid of that garble that is displayed by default?

Maybe this: https://www.jarte.com/

Chuck, thanks a lot!

Nice little program, it does exactly what i was looking for. I even changed it to open my txt files, instead of Notepad. Not too many bells and whistles, all that stuff i wouldn't use anyway. And it's even portable.

:+1: :beers:

Are you serious?!.. o)

Wordpad can be lifted from an older Windows installation (pre-24H2). Just copy the folder

/programfiles\Windows NT\Accessories

to a new home on your PC. Avoid any Windows folder so it doesn't get removed during an update.

DO does show RTF files for me as well.. "Show" and there it is, it's using a Windows preview handler if I understand this correctly. It also shows RTF files in the preview pane, do you need more?

Just for the fun, I tried some tools!.. o)

AbiWord, it seems the better option, from the GUI perspective, if you also want to edit these files.

And some random old little tool (only 600kb) "QJot.exe"..

My winner for now, the old LibreOffice v3.6.7 I still have in my hard drive / SSD. It's the last version with Win2k compatibility (iirc), it loads rather quick and looks slick! o):

Yeah, but why so easy? o)

Good question... doesn't even involve the Evaluator

Indeed no Evaluator.. o)

Did you actually try to extract and run the Wordpad on Win11? I can't try, no Win11 around.

From my experience with the Windows7 TaskManager, which I use from time to time on Win10 (since it does some things the Win10 TaskManager does not). It was not as easy as pulling off the executable from a Windows7 system, I had to track down a *.mui file and put it next to it in a specific folder. It would not run without, there are some translations or other resources in there.

The Win7 task manager is quicker and uses less resources as well, I still like it. The old school tools often still work best, compared to a lot of modern alternatives. Not sure why that is, but it is a fact! o)

Yes. See the screenshot.

Ah, sorry I did not look closely enough. You also have these en-US folders next to the executable and things, I see. So it's the same.. would you mind sending me your "ready to use" folder, so I don't have to hunt the files down on my own? o)

I guess Abr wants a copy as well!? o)

Thanks! o)

Thanks! Funny, i had checked the "10 best alternative text editors" or so, but all of it was not suitable for my humble needs.

@abr
I still recommend Softmaker Office.

I have an older version, Softmaker Office 2021.
The license is valid for 5 PCs.
If you can get them to allow me to share a license with you, I will !

Good Luck !

Thanks! So i'd have to send them an email? I will have a look into the features. Interesting observation, i have now tried a few editors from this thread, and some of them are rendering fonts in a different way, which surprised me.

Softmaker Office has a free version at www.freeoffice.com. Also look into www.onlyoffice.com which is also free.

Thanks again. I will have a look. Can't be bad to have a few office programs at hand. :+1:

Have you seen Atlantis Word Processor? Seems like fast & not deprecated like some other options that fail with UI scaling

(though might be easier to just copy the old Wordpad?)
