Microsoft is well known for epic stupid changes. As it came with 24H2, where they removed Wordpad for no apparent reason. A very bad choice. In my case, i just want to be able to open and read RTF files without having to see that strange \rtf1 \par {xyz\par trash, that is displayed along the part, that i actually want to read. And having said that, almost all substitute editors mess up the german diacritics, to make the text even more unreadable. (See my screenshot).
Very frustrating. I tried Notepad++, Editpad Lite and some others, but they all have the same issue. Only LibreOffice is a bit better in that regard, but takes ridiculously long to open even tiny text files, so i'm looking for a better option. Does anybody here in the forum, by any chance, know a better (and free) alternative? Or how to get rid of that garble that is displayed by default?
Nice little program, it does exactly what i was looking for. I even changed it to open my txt files, instead of Notepad. Not too many bells and whistles, all that stuff i wouldn't use anyway. And it's even portable.
DO does show RTF files for me as well.. "Show" and there it is, it's using a Windows preview handler if I understand this correctly. It also shows RTF files in the preview pane, do you need more?
Just for the fun, I tried some tools!.. o)
AbiWord, it seems the better option, from the GUI perspective, if you also want to edit these files.
My winner for now, the old LibreOffice v3.6.7 I still have in my hard drive / SSD. It's the last version with Win2k compatibility (iirc), it loads rather quick and looks slick! o):
Did you actually try to extract and run the Wordpad on Win11? I can't try, no Win11 around.
From my experience with the Windows7 TaskManager, which I use from time to time on Win10 (since it does some things the Win10 TaskManager does not). It was not as easy as pulling off the executable from a Windows7 system, I had to track down a *.mui file and put it next to it in a specific folder. It would not run without, there are some translations or other resources in there.
The Win7 task manager is quicker and uses less resources as well, I still like it. The old school tools often still work best, compared to a lot of modern alternatives. Not sure why that is, but it is a fact! o)
Ah, sorry I did not look closely enough. You also have these en-US folders next to the executable and things, I see. So it's the same.. would you mind sending me your "ready to use" folder, so I don't have to hunt the files down on my own? o)

I still recommend Softmaker Office. SoftMaker Software GmbH Kronacher Str. 7 90427 Nuremberg Germany
I have an older version, Softmaker Office 2021.
The license is valid for 5 PCs.
If you can get them to allow me to share a license with you, I will !
Softmaker is GDPR Compliant Software.
Good Luck !
Thanks! So i'd have to send them an email? I will have a look into the features. Interesting observation, i have now tried a few editors from this thread, and some of them are rendering fonts in a different way, which surprised me.
