[Suggestion] Confirm File Replace dialog (Rename button)

Hi!

Is there a reason that the rename options are "hidden" inside the replace dropdown? I find it quite illogical to have them there since the rename options wouldn't result in a file replace.

There is definately room for a fourth button called "Rename", but maybe you think if would result in the dialog being too busy..?

It's always been a pet peeve of mine, and it just got upgraded into a proper annoyance since I misclicked and hit the replace button instead of the dropdown arrow, and accidentally replaced the file instead of renaming it :frowning:

If you're determined to not have a separate button for the rename options, maybe they should be moved to the "Skip" dropdown button to avoid the above from happening. It's just as an illogical place for these options, but without the risk of a misclick resulting in loss of data. I would even argue that is fits better in the "Skip" dropdown since you're "skipping" the replace action and applying another action to the file operation.

FWIW, the Replace button turns into a Rename button wheb you edit the new file's Name field.

I think the idea is that all the options which do something to either file, and which ensure the new file ends up in the destination (one way or another) are on the leftmost button, while all the options which cause files to be skipped over (such that the source file may not end up in the destination) are on the other button.

Using the hotkeys for the rename options might help, if you use them enough to memorise them. e.g. If you hold Ctrl then the whole Replace button turns into a Rename New button. (The keys for other options are shown in the menu.)

Has this been improved in Dopus 13? The replace/rename conflict dialog is one of the things that annoy me most about dopus, the rare aspect where even the default windows explorer dialog is better designed... It's not only annoying (having to hold ctrl or shift to modify what the button does, instead of just showing all the available options at the same time) it's also dangerous (can lead to overwriting files if not careful). You also can't apply the same choice to multiple queued up jobs so if you want to move a lot of files in a lot of different folders you have to keep holding and clicking for every single different folder.

The button has a dropdown menu which shows all the available options, no keys required.

Hi Jon thanks for all the awesome features. Having to go through an extra dropdown button for every option is equally troublesome, a misclick would overwrite a file, and it's also very tedious for repeated operations since it doubles the click count. Having replace aka overwrite be the default instead of rename is odd since it's the risky option that can nuke a file. Even stranger is like the original poster said nearly 10 years ago: there's plenty of room on the dialog to add all the different options side by side without the need for this dropdown. Everything else about dopus is super customizable and can be made to reduce tedious click counts, but somehow this is not? I simply can't understand the logic.

example of user losing files because of this

It’s also the option people want in most situations.

If you want to rename the incoming file, there is an edit field in the dialog that lets you change the name directly. The Replace button will turn into Rename automatically if you have edited the name. (Of course, if you want it to automatically rename the new file, this doesn’t help.)

There isn’t room in the dialog to show all the options that are in the menu, and different people would probably want different options. Maybe the answer would be an editable toolbar at the bottom of the dialog, so people can customize it to their needs. (Not a small change we can do right now, however.)

I see enough room for two extra buttons.

My suggestion would be to separate replace and rename into at least two different dropdown buttons, that would help mitigate part of the issue.

The ideal would be to let users define those buttons in Preferences (rename/replace individual vs all as the default option, for example).

There's also enough room for a second button that could be the user-defined favorite option.

I understand there are other priorities with all ongoing work on the new release but I'd be excited to upgrade to it if this is taken into account at some point!

Not if Opus is in German.

There are also a lot more than two commands in the menus.

Too many keys only create confusion and the risk of making mistakes increases
If one has special needs, hotkeys are better
In my opinion

Couldn't the window scale with the buttons? Or truncate part of the word after a character limit, adding an icon to make the UI button choices visually intuitive, etc... I understand any change implies more changes and headaches for you guys, just spitballing suggestions but I trust such a talented team could find a way to improve this UI issue.

The core of the issue: "replace/overwrite" and "rename/keep conflicting files" are not complimentary, but fundamentally opposite functions, thus both deserve their own separate buttons. Dedicated copy utilities like teracopy etc take this into account.

More customization and more choices, isn't that what people use dopus for?

It does already, but it can start to look ridiculous or even not fit on the screen without truncation or tiny fonts on some buttons.

Keep in mind that languages like German and Polish (and several others to a lesser extent) tend to be ~1.5x the width of English and some terms are even wider.

Also, please link your account.

May I suggest an option under Prefs PAGE="copyconfirm" for the user to choose between either Replace or Rename as the default.

An interim workaound would be the following button that is set to automictically rename existing files when copying:

Copy Items.dcf (522 Bytes)
