I have an idea that borders file management and information management. I wonder if someone else finds it usable.
Intro:
We have already some information about all files, but rather technical (file size etc), unless someone fills Properties> Summary or uses descriptions or similar means. Pretty limited.
Idea:
My idea is to be able to associate URLs with folders/files. Using viewer with a special option for such folder/file would make it display live webpages (the same way as viewing .url file in viewer now), instead of file contents. This way any information about folder/file can be greatly expanded with low effort.
Uses:
For a folder with music of some artist, assigning his webpage, Amazon page with his recordings, myspace entry, lyrics page.
For a file with a presentation, assign a page where it was found or pages it refers to.
For a folder with images, assign a webpage (fe. Flickr) with web gallery with the images
For a program file, assign the webpage of program's author
For a movie file, assign IMDB entry, or movie forum discussion thread
etc etc etc
How it works:
Assigning: with entering URL in special dialog or dropping URL from browser onto a file (with a keyboard modifier).
In viewer, an option (button) to switch between standard display and URL display and two buttons for previous/next URL, buttons for delete/change URL.
Displaying available URLs and unassigning/changing also in special dialog.
Problems:
Choosing storage for such info.
Support for operating file (moving/renaming) beyond DO.
Maintaining assigned URLs when fe. recording file on a DVD, packing files into archive etc.
