That seems to be a common theme these days; customers having little control over their services, short of canceling the relationship. That's why outfits like yours are much valued by your customers; a very useful bit of software, with an eye on how to make it better. All at a price that is attractive.
Other utility software in my list include Beyond Compare, PowerGrep, RexBuddy, Bulk Rename, SysInfo and Metron's Waterscope. Products that are immediately beneficial as well as innovative. Thanks, Jon and Leo for being among the good guys in the software world.
Thinking more about why entry of my registration code on 2/23/26 "froze" the page (when using Firefox 115 (ESR)), I do now recall the cause. My registration code contains two adjacent 'V's which somehow entered the notes in my password vault as one 'W'. Pasting this foreshortened code into the code field was one character short of completing the field, and thus, failed to move on to the next field (user id). Pressing Enter, or clicking around, did nothing to move on by telling me something was wrong; the page just sat there. Only when I went back to the registration email and copied the code from there was success found in registering.
Since the last I remember entering a 16-char code by hand was when installing software from a CD-ROM, I don't know where or when the two 'V's transformed into one 'W'.
This 'sad' story does suggest that not allowing two 'V's next to each other may be a restriction to add to the code generation regex and that the registration code field should have a reasonable test of whether a press of the Enter key should test the code field and respond with a warning if the code entered is short by one or more characters. @Jon
Now normally, this sort of mistake would be resolved quickly, but the combination of no feedback regarding the code length following lack of easy access to the forum, made the task much more cumbersome. (That day was already not a good one, as much was spent trying to get AVG to stop deleting files on my Win 7 PC).
All is good. I understand how it failed at first (operator error) and am now resigned to firing up my Win10 VM when I want to play in the forum.
Well yes. I normally use SnagIt's 'Grab text' function to capture the registration code at the time of the transaction, just in case the confirming email is delayed or lost. Screen scraping is not fool-proof, but this would be the first time it failed me when converting such a short character sequence.
But you are right, Leo, to mention OCR as translating two 'V's into one 'W' is fully within OCR's vulnerabilities.
Still think that pressing 'Enter' or clicking on a 'Continue' button would provide the code on the registration page a chance to warn of short-comings in entry of the code. What do you think?
We will add something here yes; on the Upgrade tab it shows the number of characters remaining as you enter the code, I hadn't realised the Renew tab didn't do the same thing. Thanks for pointing it out!
Sure. I'm sorry to have done a poor job at first of explaining what went on on 2/23. I am relieved to have come to understand what failed on that day (me) to watch closely what was happening during the renewal. Your help in making the registration page more sailor-proof will hopefully help some one else down the line.
